panicked and hit rock bottom....need help!

I fought so hard to have this surgery, I was all set - no questions about it no cold feet. I had the surgery last Thursday, and I have struggled so much. Today, I think I hit rock bottom. I don't want to eat anything, I have no appetite, but I'm eating every hour just like the doctor wanted. If I smell whey Protein - I think I'm going to puke. And my doctor wants 40-60 grams of protein supplement even when I'm on regular menu. I'm not sure I can do that. I'm panicking - and part of me wants this foreign object out of me. I don't know what to do - I'm home by myself and I am just crying. I'm really in need of some support out there.

Take a deep breath and take some pains meds. Narcotics will make you feel better. As for the protein, what are you taking? I hate that crap as well so I found the IDS Whey-Protein Bullets. They are only 3 oz and have 42 grams of protein. You only need 1.5-2 a day and it goes down fast. Only THREE OUNCES and they taste like fruit. What exactly does your doc have you eating? I was on clear liquids for 4 days. This is my week bandiversary and I feel much better. It will get better. Hang in there.

Whoa.... slow down. Breathe. I have seen many people feeling similarly for the first few weeks, as the recovery time seems to be the most emotionally trying. You are doing so wonderfully! You are following your Doctor's instructions... think of obesity as a disease. You are curing yourself right now. Every step in the right direction is bringing you towards better health. Plus, how great are you going to look once the weight is gone??? Slow down. Breathe.

Try a different brand of unflavored whey Protein. Sprinkly a tablespoon into everything you eat so that you do not get a concentrated hit of smell or taste. You can do this. I really believe in you.

I really appreciate the responses. I've tried Isopure, unjury, and I'm using a local stores whey Protein, the chocolate flavor. I think I'm going to try some of those protein bullets.

I just did not except to feel this way, I was very naive. I sailed through knee surgery - I didn't even take any pain meds. I realized in my intelligent brain that this was going to be much different, but no one told the emotional side of my brain how tough it was going to be. Part of me thought I would be able to handle the pain. But, between this left shoulder pain that *nothing* can touch (i.e. - tylenol, gas-x strips, walking) feeling nauseous everything I try to drink my Whey Protein, and eating when I'm not hungry. I'm really struggling. Also, I've been in therapy since 2003 trying to NOT eat when I'm not hungry. It's just one step forward and two steps back.

Thanks again for all the responses. I've been able to stop crying.

Hi I felt the same way and I also couldnt stand the smell of whey protein .I went threw 3 different brands and finally found one called Jay Robbs (vitamine shop) it has 30 gm of protein per scoop and it dosent have that smell its realy good I put it in the blender with 1/2 of frozen banana Your not alone I went threw the same thing it gets bett I was banded 3/27 I have lost 17 pound walking 3miles a day and feel great Its a HUGE life change it gets better hang in there

Dr. Keilin and Dr. Hekier have them at their office. I have some but I haven't tried them. I think I pd $10.00 for 4 (or 6). They are in different flavors. Try WWW.noscales.com for them

Thanks, I don't go back to Dr. K until May 6, so I think I might buy online.

I know that I am the biggest advocate for sticking with what your doc says, but I don't think that you should have to stay on Protein supplements after you are on solid foods. If I had, I would have cut my tongue out by now. Just know that it gets much easier and as long as you can get protein in your regular diet once you are cleared to eat solids, you will feel much better. (Don't start the solids early though) Hang in there, it does get much better. My first week I was by myself at my brother's house...no cable, no radio, no phone, no internet. I feel your pain. But now 8 months later, those pangs of desperation are nothing compared to the confidence and happiness that I feel now.

As for the protein now, I have not tried the bullets, but they can't be much worse than the protein powders. You can pretty much only go up from there!

*hugs* It is totally tough to adjust to changing your habits on everything.

As for the Protein. I tried the Isopure and I was the same way, I couldn't stomach the smell or the taste or the fact that it left a film on my teeth. But, I got the New Whey protein bullets and even though they have a bit of the whey smell and after taste, if you don't breathe while you swallow it down (it's like a giant test tube full of a gel like liquid), the taste and smell is gone immediately. I normally drink a swallow of something flavored afterwards. I can finish half of it in one swallow.

The designer whey, I've got the french vanilla, and i mix a scoop of that in with a chocolate slim-fast, a handful of ice, and half a banana and blend and you can't really taste the whey in that either. Plus with the slimfast and the whey, it's 28 grams of protein in one thing.

I know for me, I just try to make it through each day because if I start worrying about the future it is overwhelming. You've just got to make it through one day at a time.
