Digestive issues post-op

Recommended Posts

I am two and a half weeks post op, and am having frequent diarhea. Not daily, nor several times a day, but pretty frequently. I am eating only Protein and green vegetables, plus the occassional Protein Shake. Absolutely no cheating going on! Has anyone else experienced this? Do I need to make a change in my diet, such as adding carbs? The only carbs I'm getting now is the occassional glass of white wine, which my doctor says is okay.:(

Pre-op my doctor suggested a daily dose of Metamucil, but since I've had all of these problems, that sounds like adding fuel to the fire. I love shredded wheat, but I always feel hungry very quickly after I eat it. I haven't had my first fill yet, so maybe that would get better with time. Thanks for the reply.

You are only two and a half weeks post-op, so your body is still recovering. It will take time to adjust to your new way of eating. You can try Maalox or something, but natural Fiber will eventually regulate your system. It shouldn't cause diarrhea. Are you supposed to be on solid foods already? Sometimes in the early stages, we are eating liquids and mushies, so that's what comes out! Sorry! TMI! Hang in there. It should get better. If not, talk to your doc.

I guess you would call what I'm eating "mushies." Grilled fish and very soft green vegetables, cottage cheese and canned fruit. I can certainly "mush" them up with a fork. No problems with anything going down, either. I did try some smoked chicken while I was out of town because that was all that was available at the time. It was a little difficult to get down, and I ended up washing it through with some Water. I haven't thrown up or anything. Do you think I've done any damage?

My surgeon requires 2 weeks Clear Liquids and Protein Shakes, therefore tomorrow I get to start mushy foods. woohoo I made it! Of course when all you take in is liquid you can imagine what must come out. Anyway as happy as I am with my 25 lbs down, I am ready to try a few bites of mashed potatoes. My MD also suggested tuna as a good source if Protein and said for most people it is easily tolerated. I went shopping today and bought anything easy to mush..lol.

Hey NewGal! Dr. Freeman is my surgeon as well. :)

I think our bodies are definitely still adjusting. I wouldn't be that concerned with the big D for right now. It's an adjustment phase.

I'm three months out and still suffering from Constipation. I didn't have a bowel movement for a week after surgery. I called my surgeon crying and he told me to do Milk of Magnesia. I've had constipation problems ever since. I'm just the exact opposite of everyone else. I'd rather have diahrreha any day than be plugged up. YUCK! Not to mention it hurts....

I am having the same problem. I was banded 2/11 and had a slight bowel movement one week later but since then nothing. i am not feeling stuffed or out of sorts. I am still only drinking liquids, Water, Atkins Advantage, Protein Shakes, broth. Any suggestions or should I be concerned?

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
