Issues With Protein Shakes

Did anyone have issues with getting protein shakes in? I swear I can’t get in more than a couple small sips before it foams up in my stomach and causes distress. I can do the clear proteins fine in fact I’m loving my clear protein. I get two tablespoons of a ‘warm up food’ per day and I don’t have issues with it at all. I have many different brands and so far they all been not so great. I’m managing to get one in per day because it takes me so long to drink it.

How do you go with other protein sources? Bone broth (though I found this too salty), protein water, yoghurt drink (blend plain yoghurt with milk until thin enough to sip), cream soups or consommés?

What do you mean by warm up food? When you say you can eat two tablespoons of this food per day, do you mean as a single meal or across the day?

So tonight I was able to finish my protein shake by dumping it into a large tumbler with a cup of decaf from mcdonald’s. I havent done many of the other protein sources because i’ve been so focused on trying to get the shakes in.

A warm up food is defined by my program as yogurt, protein pudding, or unsweetened applesauce.I think they prefer you eat no more than 2tbsp and I have done well with the 1tbsp. I did fine with pudding and the yogurt, I haven’t done applesauce, the dieticians implied that the applesauce is a last resort.

Doesn’t matter the protein source as long as you’re getting it in or at least are close to your goal. Honestly it can be difficult the first weeks when you’re still healing and struggling to eat/drink much at all. So don’t worry too much. You can only do what you can and if that means other protein sources than shakes that’s okay. I was told to start with 1/4 - 1/3 of a cup from the week 3 purée stage (which would include yoghurt and the protein pudding density) which is a little more than your initial two tablespoons. I’d think the advice to only eat applesauce as a last resort is because it has no protein (& could have added sugars). It wasn’t in my allowed foods at all nor was mashed potatoes which some have on the their list.

My protein go to was often thinned out tomato soup with Fairlife (higher protein) milk. I also tried a few of the first soft foods with a little of a unflavored protein powder. It is REALLY hard that first month or so to stay on goal. I struggled a LOT with water intake, I was just so full all the time. It will even out as time goes on. I also did my own protein rich shakes with a little protein powder (chocolate) and added peanut butter powder with the Fairlife milk and sometimes even a little greek yogurt added. Keep trying, you will get there.
