Knee surgery 6 months after VSG

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone and thanks for reading. I was wondering if anyone has had major knee surgery so soon after weight loss surgery. I had a TKR two years ago and I am in the process of getting a revision. I will need one of two possible revision surgeries. Hopefully I will only need a minor revision of replacing the plastic inserts with larger ones, but my surgeon is worried that the bottom half of my TKR has loosened from the bone. I wont know the revision that I need until I have a bone scan in 2 weeks, but I know it will be one of the two (both options mean opening the original scar, so they are not arthroscopic). I remember when I had my TKR, they wanted patients on a 2000 calorie diet for a short time after surgery to help with healing. I obviously can't do this anymore, so I was wondering if reduced calories can really cause an issue. Has anyone had major surgery a few months after WLS?

I know you'll do this, but talk with your bariatric surgeon and RD about this and let them help you find the solution. Then get your orthopedist involved with them. I'd think that you might need to get in 80-100g of Protein (maybe) and you'll be good to go. You have probably 14-20lbs of fat that can fuel you on those 2000 calorie needs if you're at least getting lots of protein and healthy fats for healing.

Having said that, you can do a lot of "calorie damage" by adding in 2tbsp of peanut or almond butter per day + 1 avocado + lean protein. ;) Just sayin... :D

Hope you don't have to have the biggest of the surgeries!!! :(

I guess my questions to the bariatric surgeon would be - is it advisable to have this type of surgery 6 months out from vsg? How do I cope with recovering and meet all my nutritional needs for it? Can you test me for any deficiencies prior to knee surgery to make sure I can sustain another surgery so soon? You know how TKR recovery goes, physical therapy, etc. I found the bone healing pain to be excruciating from TKR.

The recovery was rough, especially since I was 36 and had a 2 year old to care for. Hopefully this surgery will not include any work to the bone. If it is the minor of the two surgeries, they are just replacing the plastic. My doc said it's pretty easy to pop in and out.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
