Hello everyone! I am new to the forum and new to the whole scene. I had my initial consultation with my surgeon on 1/2. I scheduled my appt for 4/24 and I am terrified. I know this is something I need to do and I feel silly being nervous this far in advance but I struggle talking about it with friends and family. I am still keeping it a secret from most people. I know I am doing the right thing I'm just scared.

My surgery went great, it is hard sometimes not depending on food for comfort. But the weight loss is so worth it! I did not have any trouble just do what the dr says to do!! Good luck

Thank you! I went to a support group though the hospital I am using and every one says to was the best choice they have ever made. I am just nervous because at 27 it is hard to make a choice that alters the rest of your life.

Hey Brittany, I’ll start off by saying I’m also 27, and having my surgery on January 17th (currently on preop diet). I can relate to your comment about making such a life changing decision so young. I grappled with that immensely and at the end of the day I had to choose between continuing on my barrage of failed diets, failed lifestyle changes, etc, or to do something permanently to help me avoid getting prematurely ill or dying young.

I have only one health complication, high cholesterol, but I’m now borderlining high BP as well. I know that if I keep going the way I’m going, I will be having a triple bypass by the age of 40; and that’s if I survive any sudden and/or catastrophic health issues.

I had to look at this surgery as a preventative life saving measure. I know it’s hard at 27 to think we are changing the course of our lives (along with our anatomy) permanently, but it’s a positive change. I have not heard anyone say they regret the sleeve, and many members here will tell you they were scared too, but after doing it, they wish they had done it sooner.

I wish you all the best on your journey to making peace with your decision. It’s a roller coaster of emotions but it’s important you determine why you’re opting to do the surgery and how it can help you long term. Happy to support you if you need anything. You’ve got this [emoji1377]

You are young. The good news is that being young means that you will heal fairly quick.

If you have struggled with weight loss and your BMI is high, you are being smart by getting your weight under control now. I wish that I would have done it when I was younger.

Totally normal to be nervous - I almost backed out a week or two after scheduling. The closer I got the calmer I got though, which is weird. Or maybe I just didn't have the energy to be nervous bc I was too lethargic from the Pre-Op diet!

I think you are lucky to be doing it young. Not that it should be taken lightly, but in my 20's and 30's I wasn't heavy enough to be a candidate - still struggled with my weight/dieting/body image, but just not extreme enough for this kind of medical intervention.

I am 45 now, and when I look at the before and after pics, some of the women just look SO amazing, and then I realize that they are the ones who had it done while they were younger. Everything bounces back better Not to dis the rest of us, we still look and feel a far cry better than if we had not had the procedure, (I'm 10 days post-op now, so I'm kind of an expert, haha), but I think for most in our age group, it's the body contouring and "lifts" and skin tightening that make the best end result aesthetically speaking.

Just remind yourself that you made this decision for a good reason and try not to second-guess that too much, because that's extra stress that really isn't worth it. Just shoot for "optimistically cautious"

I think it is completely normal to be nervous. I too have been VERY nervous and wondering what the heck I was doing, even though I've been down this road 10.5 years ago with the band. I kept asking my husband "am i crazy to do this" because I was seriously doubting myself. I finally came to peace with my decision after speaking with the nurse about my biggest concerns and understanding that I've been fighting my weight since I was a toddler and that I'm not going to just wake up one day and beat this thing. I need help, and I am ready for that help.

Keep going to the support meetings too, they help a ton! You've got this!
