Haven't eaten since surgery, is this normal?

Recommended Posts

I had my sleeve done Friday morning (went home about 3 hours afterwards, I had it done at a same day surgery center). Friday and yesterday, I could barely drink a few sips of water/Gatorade with out feeling sick and getting a pressure in my chest. I did manage to eat hald of a SF Jello yesterday. I am supposed to start 'full liquids' today and I tried drinking a diluted Protein Shake, but it's taken me almost half the day to drink 10oz. I just wanted to make sure this is normal after getting sleeved. I was excited to lose my appetite and not to feel hunger, but I don't want to become dehydrated or weak from eating/drinking such a small amount. Can someone tell me if this is normal or not??

So my dr. had me on Clear Liquids for 2 - 3 days before moving onto full liquids. I ended up on clear liquids for 7 days because I couldn't tolerate anything other than Water and Isopure. On day 7, I was feeling so terrible, but dh made me get out of bed and made me "eat". That is when I started feeling better. I think I had sf pudding. I've only been hungry a few times since then, but I eat my 3 "meals" per day, and sip Water all day. It gets better each day.

Totally normal!! I also stayed on clear liquids for a week until I could tolerate more. And even then a 6 oz yogurt would take 4 to 5 hours to eat!!! Just keep getting all your liquids in so you do not dehydrate yourself and every day try something new...you will get there promise!

You don't need to worry about eating or your appetite, but it does sound like you need to get more fluids in. If you aren't getting in at least 50 ounces of some kind of Fluid, stay in close touch with your surgical team and let them know exactly how many ounces of fluids you are getting each day and what your symptoms are.

I couldn't leave the hospital if I couldn't "eat". I had to be able to finish most of a Protein shake and make a dent in the other stuff on my tray.

You need to drink. Not drinking and not using your sleeve will just allow it to swell more and it will be harder to drink with each passing day.

If you don't get fluids in you will dehydrate and you will be in the hospital.

I did not eat for a week. I was on clear liquids only, not even a Protein shake until week 2.

You definately dont have to worry about eating but you do need to worry about getting enough fluids. It is very easy to get dehydrated after WLS.

Small sips all day long literally.

I was only allowed Clear liquids like broth or Water for one week. No Protein drinks at all yet

I did feel pressure in my chest for around 4 days after any fluids. I had no problem with Water and was drinking around 1 litre plus a day. I didn't have to sip either which was odd I always thought u couldnt have lots in one go.

At five weeks post op I'm way over 2 litres a day...

It gets better believe me

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
