I just got off the phone with a Surgical Group. This nurse basically told me that the Lap Band is not proven for long term success...over 10 to 20 years. She said that most Doctors recommend the Gastric Bypass for long term success. That really upsets me. Has anyone on this forum had their band for more than 7 or eight years? Not sure how long this procedure has been active. Please let me see that it can be a long term success..... I am not at all wanting to have my organs cut and rerouted to help me get a grip on this weight issue.

Even if the band only works 10 years I still would want it. There may be some people over in Europe that see this post. I don't think US patients have had them more than 7 or 8 years. I plan on having mine for life. There is no reason why I can't.

NO ONE KNOWS THE LAP BAND HASN'T BEEN AROUND FOR 20 YRS .

I think it's been approved in the USA since 2001

My doc says it depends on your eating issues & weight -on which one he will recommend

That makes sense. The Big $$$ is a pretty good incentive. I have heard that the bypass sometimes fails as well....now you have a re-routed cut up digestive tract that cannot be reversed. I personally think the Band is the way to go. I want to continue on that track. Hopefully those older bandsters will continue to keep us all posted on their success.

Heather - you are correct - both bypass & bander can and some do gain their weight back - it is not the fault of the bypass or band - but of the person as they choose to return to their old eating habits. Neither the Band or Bypass are the magical answers for weight loss as they are only tools.

Now if they could develope a band for your brain - then you might get 100% forever results - but not with what we have available now..

Until RNY surgery pays the same as Lap-Band, I suspect that many doctors will continue to recommend the surgery that they make the most money on, RNY.

I don't understand her logic at all. The band is good for life (as long as the person uses it right). Gastric Bypass has a 'window of opportunity' that lasts 18-24 months in most patients then the body/instestines begin to adjust and adapts and most patients no longer dump on sugar/fat. The hope is that by that time that happens they have retrained their eating habits and changed their lifestyle so they can keep the weight off. A big percentage dont. That's why I chose the band.
