What about the tanning bed?

I know, I know. . it sounds completely superficial compared to most of the other questions asked here. But I started a tanning membership, and as I was laying in the bed yesterday, I got a little freaked out about the fact that my port is right under my skin, up against those bright lights!!! Will that hurt anything?

Shouldn't hurt the port, it is under the skin. But if you are less than a year out from surgery, you might want to cover your incisions, they can turn a brilliant red from the UV exposure. Doesn't happen to everyone, but a couple of folks here have mentioned it happened to them.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't hurt anything. I don't know from a doctor's standpoint but I have a tanning bed in my gym in my house and have had it since a year before I even had lap-band and it doesn't seem to be affecting anything so far. And I have been to the doctor about a million times in the past 13 months. And I tan sometimes 3 times per week.

faithmd is right...the incisions might need some extra attention but I have used a tanning bed many times with no issues at all. Don't worry...your band/port won't melt under the lamps!
