Horizontal. :-)

Seriously, the first couple of nights after surgery I slept in a recliner just because I am a side sleeper and it was a bit painful with the sutures and staples. After two nights I was able to sleep on my side, gingerly at first. After the first couple of weeks it was back to normal though.

I was fortunate to have a motion bed. This let me sleep on my back a few nights. I was back on my side before the end of the first week.
