Vitamin B1 deficiency

Recommended Posts

Can anyone provide insight or feedback in regards to Vitamin B1 deficiency? Prior to the sleeve i did not suffer from B1 deficiency and ever since sleeved when i get my blood work done quarterly by the surgeon the results show B1 levels are not in normal range. Now I have to supplement it by taking one tablet daily. Is this something of great danger/concern?

I take a B complex along with B12. I had early on a sever B Vitamin deficiency which put my ass in the hospital twice in the early months post surgery. I was put on prescription strength Thiamine (B1) which helped me greatly to regain some of my senses back. Since then I make sure to take an folic acid Vitamin pill that contains Thamine in it. My B complex also contains Thamine in it as well and I haven't had issues since. Main issue with low B vitamin especially B1 is memory. More importantly short term memory stuff.

My B12 is good. The doctor keeps stressing to me about the B1 level ( thiamine)

Yeah you want to make sure you are up with the B1 just as much as the B12. My surgeon failed to mention the importance of B1, until I had blood work back showing how low my levels were.

B1 is as important if not more than B12 after surgery. My surgeon says B1 deficiency can lead to permanent cognitive and sensory/nerve damage. It's not reversed all the way by bringing up your levels, some nerve/cognitive damage can remain so it's important to always take B1 as a preventative measure. B1 deficiency is rare though, even with surgery, only about 1-3% chance.

At my 1 week follow up, they gave me a B1 shot (B12, too), before my blood work was even done to test levels. I think it's pretty important!

Is B1 typically in a Multivitamin? My NUT didn't mention it.

I am on B1 since surgery 8 weeks ago. It's an important Vitamin. It helps with blood sugar and energy.

I am taking everything you are taking accept the d+k, and d3. I found small enough Calcium pills that I no longer take the nasty wafers, but I still keep them on stand by if need be. I am going to get some more B1 today after work since my Vitamin store has some in stock.

Is that all?

I take a multivitamin, b12, b1, c, Iron, d+k, d3, and calcium daily.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
