SIPS / SADI modified DS

Recommended Posts

Im a type 1 diabetic that did the band a year ago. I initially did well with it. Went down from 320 to 250. Well for some reason it slipped. Been recommended the rny gastric bypass. Somehow it was mentioned to me this new SIPS / SADI procedure that Dr. Roslin does and looking to hear if anyone has any experience or will be doing it.

What I understand is that the weight loss is better than the bypass and doesn't have the unpleasant dumping syndrome.

@stevodreo I had the SADI on April 1st and am doing very well. You can read about some of my experience throughout this thread: http://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/338303-may-2015-sips-patients/

I'd be more than happy to discuss any details you would like. I'm very happy with my recovery, weight loss and lack of unpleasant side effects (dumping, gas, bowel, etc...).

Ultimately, it is your desicion as to what is best for you. You will see in the other thread two of the main reasons I chose this procedure was my BMI was over 50 and I had extremely high triglycerides (lipids/fatty liver). This method is proven to very quickly resolve those issues. I also have severe obstructive sleep apnea. I will be making an appointment for a new sleep study/evaluation once I drop below 250 to see if the CPAP pressure requires adjustment or if I can get rid of the machine yet. (crossing fingers).

Thanks for responding!

So how bad have you found the malabsorption to decrease energy?

Also how large is the pouch left, like can you eat more than 4 z of food?

I've been considering the RNY bypass and I'm most concerned about the Dumping syndrome. Being that i'm a Type 1 Diabetic I'm nervous than when I have a low blood sugar and eat sugar to raise them ,that ill end up suffering then from dumping if that makes any sense.

@@stevodreo my only real decrease in energy was during the first three weeks, which is normal because of recovering from a major surgery. I went walking around EPCOT center on day 11 or 12...I kinda pushed it and over did but I really wanted a change of scenery. I'm almost 50lbs down and have a lot more energy than I did before surgery.

To begin with because of swelling the sleeve holds about 2-3 oz from what my doctor told me as you heal and the sleeve stretches a bit 4-6 oz is about what most people end up with. This is why they stress 5 small meals/day. It helps with energy and maintaining your blood sugar.

With the SADI you do have to commit to a life time of Vitamins. A special Multivitamin that is high in AEDK, Calcium, Iron, B-12 either sub-lingual weekly or injected monthly. I also have to take pepcid complete 2x/day for the first 6 months. I also chose to add Biotin (hair, skin, nails formula) for good measure. You will require 80-100 grams of protein/day so basically you become a carnivore but keep in mind fish and chicken are the leaner options. These were all things that I was wiling to accept to get healthy so I can enjoy my time with my children.

Do you know how the Vitamin deficiency compares with the gastric bypass deficiency?

How many days were you in the hospital? And how long did you take off from work.

@stevodreo I do not have the answer to that. I do know that DS/SADI do require higher levels of AEDK and Iron than RNY.

I was in the hospital for 3 days. They gave me the option to hangout for another day but the next day was Easter and I wanted to be home with my kids.

I took off for three weeks but could've easliy returned in two. I had the time off and spent most of the third week hanging with my sister, shopping and relaxing. :)

You might want to consider coming to a support group at Lenox Hill. There are often SADI patients there.

Got my haircut today and its always amazing how much better i feel afterwards.
i have always considered it an odd thing that i enjoy a haircut so much.
The smell of the barbershop (no salons allowed) and the whole scissors and clippers feel and sound is so relaxing.
I have had the same barber since 1987 and i am not sure how i will handle it if that guy ever dares to die on me. I am pretty sure that the magazines on the bottom of the stack are the same ones from my first visit.
just started Ron Powers -Mark Twain Biography- enjoying it

I have to say, even more than 2 years out, it is so much easier to be good when your busy and so easy to go wrong when your bored.  Crappy weather and the wife is sick so i feel trapped in this house and i have to really watch myself.  At least the holiday leftovers are gone.
Going to get out this week even if for only a few hours, maybe go see  Ford vs Ferrari that looks real good.
Ok, whining over, I hope everyone is doing well and had a good thanksgiving.

I hear ya. I notice the only time I ever "feel like eating" when I'm not actually hungry is when I'm watching TV for too long.
