So I am in the early process to getting the gastric bypass approved, for years I've been wanting to get this procedure done but always managed to back out because I was scared now I am determined to get it done no matter what, but today I was talking to a good friend "which had no idea about the surgery" and she was telling me that this past Monday they just buried her mother in law she died of complications due to the sleeve procedure. She developed a blood clot which traveled and killed her, according to her story they did not use the boot to prevent the blood clot during surgery and they wanted to release her from the hospital in less than 24hrs. Now I am freaking out and second guessing my surgery. Ugh

Don't second guess it. TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR ...explain this to your doctor, let him know your concerns. There ARE risks involved in ANY surgery, but there are also risks in staying obese.

Christy....ty for posting ur concern. If you research this....this is VERY RARE. This sounds like negligence at its finest. I would not change my mind based on someone elses dr not being competent. Just be sure to thoroughly check out ur surgeon and his policies for his surgeries. I know my personal dr doesnt let us out less than 72 hrs after surgery. I will be a lil longer I'm sure due to open Rouxny. I hope this helps. God bless. Misty.

I'm trying not to second guess myself I'm almost sure I will be getting it done, like I told my friend it's kind of like damn if you do damn if you don't. If I don't get the surgery done I can develop so many things too. She told me just go to the gym you can lose it ,I'm only 34 years old and have arthritis everywhere due to chemo therapy back in 2007 I told her I can barely walk let alone go to the gym and work out I feel like I'll be walking with a cane or walker soon if I don't lose the weight I weight 245lbs and my body can not take it

Please do not let someone else tragedy prevent you from being healthy, discuss your concerns with your doctor, and remember the good always outweighs the bad, think about your mobility now and how you feel and think with this life changing miracle can give you. I know for me I was taking insulin 6 times a day along with high blood pressure and high cholesterol and within three days of surgery I was off all of my medications and feeling great. Ok I have a question, I went to a pulmonary appointment which was for the 6 minute walk, and Tuesday I have appt for upper gi, X-rays and ab ultrasound. I have all these appointments and not one is to see the surgeon again do I see him after all my other appointments?

Christy...yea you will see your surgeon again prior to the surgery. I just saw my surgeon for the second time, he went thru everything ...good and bad.... and I had to sign off on the paperwork. I will see him again July 21st - day of surgery!

I met my surgeon in March and have been doing preop tests ever since. I too wonder if I'll ever see my surgeon again lol. October can't get here fast enough!

Christy, I just saw my surgeon today--my surgery date is July 23. I talked to him about all of my concerns including blood clots. He told me that in his facility, blood thinner medication and leg covers are standard procedure. Maybe this is something you can have approved ahead of time.

There will definitely be some questions I'll be asking him whenever I see my surgeon again

I'm sorry hearing bad stories brought up so much anxiety. But, it has to be taken in perspective too. Was the woman extremely obese? At risk for clots? Other medical conditions that could have put her at risk? How old was she?

You know, if you look at anything with risk, you're apt to find stories that can terrify you. I used to ride my bike to work sometimes along a canal path (no roads except maybe 1/2 mile of the trip) and my friends at work were so terrified -- telling me how dangerous that was. I always laughed and told them they were in SO MUCH more danger driving the busy congested road they had to come in on. I'm sure there are fatal accidents on that road at least once a week. If I considered how dangerous accidents in cars could be, I'd never drive.

If you weigh the risks of being obese with the risks of having surgery, you can probably come to the conclusion that surgery is safer. If you are at risk for blood clots, you'll probably have to take blood thinners for a while and take other precautions.
