Newbie with bowel issues - help?

Hello all,

I am very new to this site as you can see by my profile. I had been looking into this app/site for a few weeks prior to my surgery. The iPhone app is kind of terrible (anyone else agree?) so I've finally decided to just get on my laptop and figure it all out. I'm glad that this website exists because I really have no one to talk to about this stuff and everyone will probably just think I'm complaining anyhow.

My surgery was May 21st and to be completely honest, it's been pretty miserable for me. The surgery "wounds" were so painful and no one really warned me of how painful it could really be. I'm a pretty happy person so my family and friends thought it strange in the hospital when I was all down and not even a hint of a smile.

Let me back up by saying, I've never had surgery in my life. I have my tonsils, appendix, gall bladder, etc., which doctors and nurses were all surprised by for some reason. Anyhooooo...

Since it's the 6th day post-op, I've been feeling much better with my belly pain. However, I've had diarrhea ever since I went the first time after surgery. (I know it's gross, but I can't be the only one!?!) I also have nausea every day that comes and goes with no real pattern. My doc suggested that I try soy Protein drinks, instead of whey Protein Drinks. Thus far, it has not made a difference. I prefer my whey Protein Drink (Isopure) because it's clear so it's much easier to ingest and actually get the proper amount of protein in a day.

Does anyone have suggestions as to my possibly overly-sensitive bowels? And the nausea?

Thank you for reading!

@@James Marusek - thank you for your post. If you cut out all milk products, did that mean no creamy Protein drinks? That's one of my sources of protein at the moment. I don't think I can eat a banana yet either but I would love to if I could! My doc first thought it was the type of protein I was drinking (whey vs. soy) and I switched with no affect. I have been drinking milk though as a source of protein as well.

I used a lactose free Protein Drink (muscle milk light) and did not add milk to it, only Water. I added a half a banana and blend it with the Protein powder and water.

I won't say that everyone develops lactose intolerance after surgery, but I did.

The meal plan is separate from the Protein Drinks. You can add stuff like bananas to your protein drink, so long as you turn it into a liquid, and not have it counted against your meal plan.

You can also mix your shakes with unsweetened almond milk if you have lactose problems. Or use the lactose free milk. I can eat cheese and yogurt and stuff like that but get very gassy and nauseous if I drink milk straight.

You could try Jay Robb egg white protein powder. It has 24 grams of protein in each serving.

You can mix it with unsweetened Almond Milk. That will give you a little more protein.

You could use Torani sugar free syrups for flavor and they come in a multitude of flavors.

Jay Robb is sold at Whole foods, from the company direct or Amazon.

Torani sugar free syrups come from the company direct or if you have World Market stores in your area you can get it there.

Take it easy and feel better.

Thank you for the responses!

I definitely want to try the egg Protein powder and the Torani syrups. I just ordered some unflavored protein powder so I can drink it AND eat it. I hope it doesn't taste too horrible.

I love seeing that I'm not alone. I did have diarrhea for the first couple of weeks after surgery, now my problem is the opposite. I also have nausea after I eat ANYTHING. And THAT is getting old, fast. ha ha ha I have nausea pills which I was told to take every day... and I am. But as soon as I eat...nausea.

Another thing that I'm finding quite bothersome is gas. UGH! Does anyone know if we can take, like, Gas-X or anything like that. I mean, it's not so bad when I'm home and can get some relief... but when I'm at work.... well, that's another story. ha ha
