Thyroid (hypo) condition and gastric bypass anyone?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, i have a quick question and I will keep it short to save you time. Does anyone have hypothyroid and chose to get the bypass? I was on my path to the r n y and suddenly got diagnosed with hypothyroid which is horrible (slow thyroid). Makes you feel weak, can't lose weight, super fatigued, brain fog, joint pain, headaches and Hair loss and dry skin. Oh Joy! I'm also insulin dependent diabetic. Icing on cake here.... So I'm wondering will I have a double dose of what everyone else expects while recovering from r n y surgery? Any advice is welcomed as I have become you tube obsessed and online research gonna make me bonkers. Thanks in advance.

I have had it since 1991. no problems......I just take Synthroid

Thank you very much for your reassurance. I just started on levothyroxine, generic of synthroid and hoping my symptoms subside. How long did it take for you to get stable after starting the synthroid? I have shortness of breath...did you have that too? I see a cardiologist May 1st and it can't wait. Oddly enough i got worse right after I made the brave decision to say yes to my surgery. My only regret is that I should have done this years ago when I wanted it and was way healthier. Who knew?

I have the same issue as you, and I have only found out on the pre-op blood test. So me and my surgeon decided to not start anything until 3 months after my surgery when I due for another blood test and he wants to see if maybe with weight loss the hormonal issue will resolve by itself. I doubdt it but I am willing to give a chance and I hope for the best!!! I have to add that my slow thyroid doesnt seem to affect my weightloss- When I have found out I have hypothyroidism I was worried that it will be harder for me to lose weight but I am down 8 kilos (17pound) in 15 days. I am happy with that!

Oh that is great! You started off excellent. That is my worry... Will the thyroid stop me from losing... Thank you for helping me. I assume that this surgery will help as our weight does cause these hormonal imbalances. Diabetes makes everything crazy too. You are brave and smart. I shall be like you and move forward with my clearances. I almost canceled my appt. why prolong what will make me better... Thank you.

I was diagnosed hypothyroid in 1994. I do blood tests (about) yearly to check the levels and have had to have my dose changed around a lot. It will make you feel tired, gain weight, and lots of other obscure symptoms. However, once I got on the meds, I did NOT lose the 40 pounds or so I had gained. They don't super-rev your system or anything, just get you back to normal hormone-wise.

I'll be on the meds for life, but at least they are very cheap and have few side effects.

Oops -- one more thing -- hypothyroidism is very common -- it's estimated 1 in 8 people are hypothyroid. Just some infor for you.

I had my thyroid removed 10 years ago due to cancer. For 10 years, I searched for every reason to blame my lack of thyroid on my weight gain, fatigue, fibromyalgia, etc. All I got for that was heavier and more depressed.

In Dec 2013, I went for VSG, also very concerned that I may not be as successful as "normal-thyroid people. Today, only 5 months later, I am down 70 pounds, have unbelievable energy, feel wonderful, and I have a totally new outlook on life. I am back to believing in my own body's ability to get healthy (this was a tough one after the cancer diagnosis), because my body is responding to my efforts. I still have a ways to go, but I KNOW my body will do this for me as long as I do what I'm supposed to do.

Bottom line - I sure know that feeling of what-if-I-cant do this because of my thyroid issues - my experience is GO FOR IT! The thyroid issues are another reason to GO FOR IT, not to fear it. Good luck!

Be very careful with the generic...my doctor says she will not sign off on that. I get mine through Express Scripts and once they sent me that anyway. My TSH went way up......as soon as I got back on the Synthroid for a few weeks it went back down. Also do not take Vitamins etc with you thyroid medicine. Wait about two hours. It took me a long time to get the right dosage. I got too much the first time and felt a pounding in my throat like someone was choking me. Once I got the right dosage, I had no more problems.

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in 1999. I also take Synthroid. I had no problems recovering - it was actually way easier and faster than I expected. My weight loss was better than I expected - at 7 months I lost 100lbs and by 10 months I had lost 115lbs. I don't expect to lose any more. I'm currently 118lbs and wearing a size 6. I feel amazing! :-)

Hi Karenlee, omg so sorry for the late late reply. .. i had been scared off of this site and out of my wits by the same person who scared me off two years ago w her horror stories... sheesh. Lol but I'm back on and still working on my requirements for surgery.. i haven't been tested for pcos. I will surely ask. My tsh was high, around 5.6 or so and I'm now on levothyroxine, a low dose to start so I still feel listless. My plan is to get this thyroid or pcos medicated and under control before the bypass as I don't want to feel super messed up after the fact and then go crazy blaming my bypass for how I feel. It really really sucks if you ask me because when I finally decided to go through with the bypass and mustered up my courage, i got hit with low thyroid functions which i read can be caused by the highs and lows of my blood sugar swings. Makes sense to me. I thank you dearly for your response and i am sorry I had not seen it or logged in here in quite some time. Thanks again though. :)

It's ok! :) You were scared off by someone?? I've learned a lesson too- don't go into the rant section. lol

PCOS is tricky to diagnose, even with a blood test. Most all of my gyns in the past and PCP said it's not evident but my Reproductive Endocrinologist confirmed it. All of us PCOSers each have different sypmtoms, another reason why it's hard to diagnose. In my case my body makes too much estrogen compared to progesterone (and found out I was one stage away from having cancer after they took my uterus out last November due to Complex Hyperplasia), cysts on ovaries, I don't produce (or not enough anyway) of the hormone that releases the eggs and didn't have menstrual cycles unless I induced them by taking progesterone. It's a whole endocrine system issue, not just with the female parts. It's been totally frustrating to me that since my uterus is no longer there my drs won't even bother checking my hormones anymore :( Just because it's gone doesn't mean the PCOS is gone. It will always be there. Meds can help reduce the symptoms. Insulin Resistance can also be a part of PCOS. Fortunately I don't have that but have been on the meds to help that (metformin/Glucophage). I quit taking them though because my stomach just can't handle them. Other women have success on it though, ovulate and have normal(ish) cycles. Losing weight with PCOS is doubly hard. We usually carry the weight on our mid section. Also, thyroid issues is common too, as is anxiety, and other stuff. I am on .75 mcg of levothyroxine. I was taking .88 mcg but my hair was falling out more and straw-like. Or maybe that was when I quit taking it for a while because I was 'testing' to see how my levels were. lol ya, I think it was the latter.

Oh! and if your hair is falling out too, I found a GREAT shampoo!!!!!! Nexxus Youth Renewal Rejuvenating Shampoo and conditioner. You can buy it at Walmart. It's AMAZING!!!!!!!!! I used to get handfuls of hair every day and clog up the shower drain. Now I only get a few hairs that come out every day.

Anyway, probably more than you wanted to know. LOL! If you ever want to chat, just holler! :)

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
