I'm sorry but I'm very confused by this post..

Not good, not good at all.... Please people don't do it, and please stop suggesting for other people to do it.

First, this behavior is the first steps of bulemia and getting into the habit of chewing food and spitting it out can lead to a very serious eating disorder. After WLS we are already dealing with changing the way we relate to food, so we want to instill good habits all along the way and avoid the bad ones as much as possible.

Second, there's a biological reason not to do this too. When you smell food and when it enters your mouth and you begin to chew, the body goes into Prep Mode to receive food. Your salivary glands produce saliva, your pancreas produces insulin, your liver produces gastric acid and your brain begins to calculate how much nutrition you're about to receive from the food you eat so it can keep track of it's daily needs/calories --- the body is a well tuned machine and it knows how to deal with food when it knows it's coming. But then you spit out the food. Your body still has excess saliva, insulin, gastric acid and it can't figure out why it didn't get the nutrition it thought it was going to get so the brain accountants go nuts.

Excess insulin in your body causes your appetite to increase so you'll eat more food to soak up all that extra hormone. Excess gastric acid in the stomach -- now released at the Y of your common channel -- can cause indigestion or heartburn or ulcers. And those brain accountants are now doing some creative math to recalculate the nutritional value of food because it thought it was going to get a certain number of calories, but none came, so next time you try to eat that same food the brain thinks you need twice as much to get the same nutrition as it thought it should have gotten last time.

So not only is the whole "chew and spit" habit a training ground for bulemia, it's also a way to tease your body into thinking it's getting food when it really isn't. Bulemia is a very serious illness and not something you want to play around with.

I guess the other thing I would add, is that most of us suffer from disordered eating..

You are here and having this surgery as a tool to help you with time and space to work on this disorder. You suggest doing this until you can eat "normal" again.

It doesn't quite work like that. You need to take the very hard steps to fix your disordered eating FROM THE BEGINNING! Because it is very easy, as you get a bit further out to go right back to your old unhealthy eating habits sleeve or no sleeve...

I understand your concern, but clearly you did not take the time to read my entire post. Not only did I discuss all of the negative impacts you have cited, but I also many, many times in my article told people that this is an eating disorder and not to do it.

THE POINT IS, that people are doing this, just search the forums and you will see, and unfortunately they have no idea what they are doing. If they are going to do it anyway, I think they are entitled to know what they are doing and how to help do it more safely, working towards not doing it at all.

As long as it was, I did read the whole thing. In fact I think I deserve a medal, as it was quite long and my attention span is not...

As I said above this is the time to work on your disordered eating.. You will have a short window to do that don't waste it with ways to get around the sleeve..

For those people who refuse to take your warning and are going to chew and spit anyway (Yes, there will be many people who do it, despite our warnings), what advice can you offer them to make sure they are informed and minimize medical risks while they do it?

This is nuts, people often end up with a weight problem, due to food addictions or other disorders.. , to have the surgery and find ways to continue a food addition eating disorder is a recipe for not optimizing the surgery. If someone finds the need to do this, she/he needs get themselves to a counselor, and work through this disorder. IMO this is a crazy advice. I find it highly unlikely that any Dr would suggest this as a safe thing to do and if any dr or psych evaluator knew you were engaging or planning to engage in such behavior, that they would choose to perform or recommend one for surgery.

So the only thing that I would bluntly say??

Is this is why there are statistics.

Some of us will make it, some of us won't. Read, you will see that everyday too..

As for dealing with the real pain that many of us are trying to "heal" with food?

I know the "hole" I know that I ate to fill that hole.

But now I must learn to feel the pain hold the pain and be ok experiencing the pain without the crutch of food to numb it.

Also I am not perfect, far from it, and I have stumbled more than once. It is well documented on this forum as a matter of fact.

So i am in no way trying to "bash" anyone.

I am here to heal and to help others heal.

I guess your next post will be for alcoholics just to swish the liquor around in their mouths then spit it out. WTF man???

I started doing this about a week after I was sleeved. It was NOT helpful. It was at first, but then it was too tempting. I found myself wasting tons of food. Even worse, I started licking the flavoring off chips. I had to just stop. I am addicted to food, so I have to be very careful about what goes in my mouth. Destructive behavior can't be done safely. Please do NOT chew and spit!

or as you are saying "trying to find a healthier way" is not in anyway a healthy thing to do. That's why there is no info on the "right" way to do it.

Don't you see that eating to temporarily cover the depression, as you put it above, is a self destructive thing to do?

There is no way, no matter how you slice it, a safe way to do it!

So you want the person to preserve their teeth or stomach so the acid doesn't get them?

That, my dear, is the least of their problems with this behavior

Hello, i hv the same problem with chewing long n swallowing fast. Thats being one of my biggest problem since i had my surgery on 12/04/13. I get the burn in my stomach n the food stop at my throat but eventually goes away after moving around or some sip of water. Im hoping it gets easier for both of us. My 3 wks appt is today i wanna see if i lost anymore weight more than the 13lbs i did on my 1st wk.
