Hiatal Hernia

As anyone had a hiatal hernia before surgery? What did they do? My Dr is going to do a repair at time of my RNY and I am wondering if anyone else has had this done and what was it like? How did you feel afterward?

THey just stitch it closed, no biggie, I had both at the same time and my recovery was really a piece of cake.

My barium eval showed a mild hiatal hernia. My dr hasn't said anything about it (I actually just found out about it a few weeks ago and my eval was months before) I think it's a much more common thing than what people believe. It makes sense if the dr wanted to fix it to just do it then - one surgery versus two is better! But, it's a pretty common thing in obese people.

Thanks both of you. Just curious. I had no idea I had one until I met with my surgeon. I have had reflux for over 10 years and that also contributed.

I think it added one more incision (I had 6 instead of the typical 5) and 45 minutes to the operation. Other than that, no big deal. Of course I have no idea if my recovery was worse because of it, but I was back to work a week post-op.

I actually had one with the band, it was small, but he repaired it then. I actually only had four holes with that, five when they took the band out and another five with the by-pass. Actually, didn't know any difference other than I haven't had heartburn since. Which I totally like.
