Cant shake cough 2.5 weeks after surgery

I had surgery about 2.5 weeks ago. There was no cough for 2 weeks and then 5 days ago I have a slight sore throught and now i can't shake this cough. Its like I can't breath deep enough and it's a very dry cough. Its driving me crazy and I feel like it is robbing me of my energy. I don't even know if I can take a cough medicine or what. I will be calling my dr tomorrow but was wondering if there's anything I can do tonight and should I be worried.

I had a horrible cough about a month after surgery and was able to take cough syrup with codeine. Only needed it for 2 days then all was fine
