So, I have just completed my six month lifestyle program two weeks ago and now I'm just waiting on a surgery date. My aunt, who has supposedly been "supporting" me this far, asked me why I decided to take the easy way out, instead of doing it on my own, since im only 19. Well I have a very low tolerance for people who assume gastric bypass is the easy way out! And tryin to explain why it is not the easy way out was out was just like talking to a wall. Pointless... I just can not believe people's attitudes towards us who choose this.

Hi! My surgery date is May 21. It has been quite a surprise as to who is being supportive. But I just have finally come to the point to where I know that I am doing the right thing for me and my life. Hang in there!

Same thing here with me. I tried for the Lapland when I was 20. But insurance changed and didn't accept me. Now at 23 I am approved and having surgery may 8th. Some of my so called friends back then told me I had to work for weightloss and not take the easy way out. Needless to say, now only a few of those friends are still by my side and have changed opinions after being told that it's a hard fight having surgery too. We still have to work at it. Bypass is not a free ticket to happiness. Lol it just aides in our effort to lose weight. Good luck to u and don't let anyone get u upset about "taking the easy way" cause I bet half of them couldn't do what we are doing

I had a talk with my hubby yesterday, and when explaining everything to him, he just cut me off and told me,

"fuck everyone else and their opinions. you don't need my permission or anyone's for that matter to make a change. this is your life and in the end, you're the one living it. i'm never going to understand the decision you're faced with because i've never been in that position, but do what you want to do because you want to do it. don't do it for anyone else, do it for yourself. and who knows, maybe someone out there is just as afraid as you are. and seeing that you have this surgery and seeing all the positives could give others the strength to do the same."

that conversation gave me the final push to move forward 100% with this.

the reality is, its not an easy way out. it is simply a tool, a push in the right direction. its up to us to use this to benefit us. and from what i've read on here, post surgery isn't exactly a walk in the park. we still have to work hard to get where we want to be.

OK, your aunt has used the adjective "easy". Here are some others she might want to consider: intelligent, effective, life-changing, long term, amazingly beneficial health wise - the single most effective treatment for (or prevention of) type 2 diabetes that medical science presently has to offer, reduced risk of hypertension, some types of cancer, heart disease, sleep apnea, liver and kidney problems, and the list goes on and on and on, cost effective (when considered in terms of long term health care costs), and there really are no words to describe what it does for your confidence and self-esteem.

Easy? I don't think most of us that have "been there, done that" would describe it as "easy". But for the sake of discussion, let's give her that. Let's agree with her - it's "easy". You're right Ms. Aunt, "easy". One question for you. With all of the truly astounding benefits that this procedure offers, benefits that are well documented, supported by medical science, and right there for anyone to see - are you seriously suggesting that as a thoughtful, intelligent, well-informed person I should ignore all of that because it's just too darn EASY? The only worthwhile solutions in life are the really HARD ones? There aren't many who can walk that talk.

Thanks guys Having people who understand completely where in coming from, helps so much. I am the one who is living my life, and that's exactly what I'll tell her of she brings it up again. I think her problem is, she does not want to see me happy, only because she is not happy with her own life well sorry, I know and will soon experience the difference between simply being alive and "living" I appreciate every one of you who help and encourage, this support group is simply amazing...

Honestly I ignorantly thought the same thing for years. But after some friends went through it and I began the process it was very enlightening so to speak....

I would recommend asking your aunt to go to your appointments with you or the support groups. Once she gets all the info she should change her tune

Oh no! Even with this diet i feel who the he'll said it was easy? I feel like I'm dying but it's worth it.
