it will get better! i'm a week out today and i'm feeling good and i'm down 13lbs! it hurts at first, but it's worth it! walk those gas pains off! LOL welcome to this incredible new journey! here's to the new you! congrats!

I had my sleeve on the 24th also. Yesterday was hard, but I slept through most of it. Today , I am feeling much better, no nausea, no problems with liquids, and I am able to take pain pills instead of the morphine. I am looking forward to what comes next!

I don't want to scare anyone out there about to have op, but I'm 6 days post op and it has been a total and complete nightmare - worse than I could have possibly ever imagined. But wait.........it's not all because of the op, it's because of the horrible and incompetent nurses who had no empathy or compassion and failed to notice they were injecting me with a drug I was having serious negative reaction to. Getting better now each and every day and the team at WLSA have been absolute godsends. Can only get better from here xx

I was sleeved on the 24th; and although the dietary counseling and nutritional support preparation registered, I, too, was just not prepared for the pain I experienced post-op.

I made the decision to get the Sleeve, in June 2013; while weighing approximately 463lbs. I intentionally started the liquid diet 1.5 months prior to surgery (approx. Aug. 16th) because I anticipated challenges adopting an all liquid diet, prior to surgery. Actually there were none. (Yay!!!) I began with one Protein shake, a day, and two regular meals during week one and two; two shakes and two meals, a day, during week three. During the fourth and fifth week, I had two shakes a day, and substituted the meal with a healthy portion of lean protein, each day. I remember going to the local Brazilian Churesquería, and ordering one whole chicken and half order of pork ribs, to eat for dinner over that week. There was no justification for that methodology, whatsoever, other then it being my personal BBQ pitty party. I attended my final nutritional counseling session during week five, and weighed in at 449lbs. I used an abbreviated schedule for week six: "the all liquid diet week." Week six concluded on Monday with my final pre-op surgical consultation and weigh-in. According to the scale in my surgeon's office and one-day before getting sleeved, I weighed in at 432lbs. I did not anticipate or set out to lose 31lbs, prior to surgery and I had not monitored changes in my weight. A scale had never been considered a friend of mine. So now I arrive the next morning at the hospital, feeling great, knowing I had lost the 31lbs.

I have the procedure and I recall waking up in recovery feeling a tremendous amount of pain and asking for medication. The nurse's response was something to the effect of needing to ask the surgeon if I could receive more "pain medication." I recall moaning from the discomfort; and repeating my request for pain medication. At one point I vaguely recall someone attempting to place the oxygen nose tube, over my face and around my ears. With my eyes closed, I removed the oxygen tube and told the attendants that I needed more pain meds before I could receive the oxygen. My three-day hospital stay was a chorus line of the nurses telling me that I had too much pain meds; and that I needed to get out of bed and walk around that wing of the hospital floor. I actually did get out of bed a few times, but without fail, every attempt to walk the hospital floor began with me a kind of pain that was similar to feeling as if my bowels were going to evacuate my belly. I had no security in that feeling; and the thought of walking more meant experiencing an increased level of pain, to which the attendants, on duty, would respond with "that's how you get the gas out."

For the life of me, I just cannot recall a single pre-op consultation or counseling session that addressed post-surgical pain. I did not develop, until far too late, a reasonable expectation for the pain I would be in following the procedure.

Needless to say, dose after dose, day after day, the amount of pain I was in did eventually subside. I was discharged from the hospital with a prescription for a liquid pain medication; and have used it faithfully.

Tomorrow will be day 6 post-surgery, and I am scheduled to have my first follow-up session with my surgeon. Only today can I even begin to entertain the notion of scaling back on the frequency of medication doses needed to control my pain; and truthfully I plan to stop taking it tomorrow, once I determine I can function outside of my home. The gas; the drinking Water, hot tea, chicken Soup broth and Protein Shakes out of small (1) ounce-cups; and everything else, I could deal with. The pain I experienced, post-surgery, is the only thing that would make me question if I were strong enough, physically and mentally, to do the sleeve surgery, if I had to make the same decision again.
