I welcome any feedback about some of my concerns...I am one week out from my surgery and have not taken any of my diabetes meds since I came home from the hospital...my PCP advised me not to take them unless my glucose levels were consistently over 150...well, I have not been pleased so far, because I've had a few readings as high as 200 I am concerned because I am hardly taking in any calories (definitely less than 800 daily) and no carbs...I thought for sure my levels would stay below 150, but I guess not...I was truly optimistic that I might be one of those diabetics who post-VSG never had to take meds again...I was just wondering if anyone could share their experiences the first weeks after VSG surgery (diabetics that is)...I will say that I have been a diabetic for over 10 years now, and have been on a high level of meds (1000mg metformin twice daily plus 40 units of Lantus insulin daily)...maybe that has something to do with it

Hi. I am a diabetic and I'm not taking my meds either. I spoke to my dr about it and he said to just monitor it for two weeks then see if you still need it. Don't forget, surgery, the meds and your mental state all put stress on your body which can increase the levels.

Give your body time to heal and speak to your dr about it.

I was more worried that if I did have my insulin that I would have a hypo!

And to add I'm on 1000mg of metformin and 20 units of insulin a day too.

Me dr did mention that if my levels do start to creep up to take the metformin as usual and not insulin.

I was diagnosed as diabetic 15 yrs ago. 2 yrs before surgery I was on 150 units of insulin daily plus 2000 mg metforin. I also was told not to take anything if numbers under 150. When that did not last I added back metforin. Then insulin. I take same metforin and 30 units before bed. At least not taking 4 shots a day and testing 4 times a day. Endo seems to think it will improve as I loose more weight.

When I had my band 12/21/11 my Dr. told me the same thing and I never needed to go back on them. I had my revision on 5/6 and my sugars were going crazy. Also up in the low 200's I am 7 days post op and they seem to be regulating now that I am on whole liquids. Your body is adjusting to your new diet, plus the pain meds and other stuff. I would just monitor closely and let your Dr. know if it doesn't go back down.

Don't give up hope.

I'm 7 months out, before WLS I was on 1000 mg. metformin, Januvia, and 30 units of Levimir daily. Right after surgery my levels were really good then about 2 weeks out I had to start take the metformin again. I was very discouraged to say the least. The more weight I lost and the more active I became, the lower my blood sugars. I switched to cinnamon at about 3 months out and now happy to report that's all I take for BS. So hopefully your levels will come down with a little time.

I was taking 2000mg metformin and actos for the diabetes. I'm down to 1000 mg metformin and 0 actos. I go see my surgeon's PA tomorrow and hopefully I will be down another 500. My goal is to be drug free by the time my year is out. My sugars rarely get of 100, but in the hospital they were up around 230.

My A1C was almost 10 prior to surgery and I was on 2 medications. After surgery, I was off of them for 2 weeks, but then has to take Metformin due to high morning and bedtime sugar levels. I have since lost 60 pounds, at almost 6 months out, and my A1C was 5.1. I am off all meds and go back for a check up in 6 months. I took myself off the meds once I noticed my numbers we're mostly normal. That was about 2 months after surgery. The diabetes doctor just needed to confirm it for me.
