Hey guys,

How is everyone doing today? I had a bunch of carb cravings today and yesterday so I am feeling a little discouraged. I haven't made that great of choices this week so I went ahead and made my fill appointment for February 23rd.

I signed up for an 8k race in 2 weeks. I think I am going to try to do an event a month to keep myself on the workout track. I don't have to do well but I want to stay motivated. I can't work out until Saturday because of the Lasik and I think that makes me grouchy.

Someone asked their doctor questions about the life of the band. I just wanted to post it here, just in case you didn't read it.

Periodic band replacement - reporting back from my doc visit

<HR style="COLOR: #d1d1e1" SIZE=1><!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->This is a followup to a thread I started a couple of days ago about periodic band replacement. I saw my doctor yesterday and asked him about this and a few other things. I go to Cedars, which is the same place where Sharon Osbourne got banded. In fact, I think my doc assisted during her surgery. They've been doing the band at cedars-sinai a lot longer than the majority of programs in this country. Anyway, my doctor is a great guy. Here's what he had to say:

- When Sharon O. says the band can only be in your body for ten years, she's basically talking out of her rear end. (He didn't say it that way, of course). Obviously he couldn't give me details (patient confidentiality) but he said Sharon an atypical case because of her other health issues like chemotherapy, bulimia, etc.

- The band is for life. Barring unexpected issues or complications, once it is in there, it stays in there. Period.

- I asked why it is then that things like breast implants have to be replaced periodically but the band doesn't. He said those are more fragile, move around a lot more, and are more vulnerable to outside forces like car accidents, someone hitting you in the chest, etc. Those types of things aren't major issues for the band.

- I asked what about erosion over the long term from the band rubbing against the outside of your stomach. He said that the band is stitched on and doesn't move much at all. It's not like your stomach is in constant motion like your heart, so there's not a constant rubbing rubbing rubbing going on. He also said that erosion is very rare in their practice.

- I asked how often he had to convert the band to bypass because of things like having to have the band replaced, erosion, etc. He said he has only rarely had to do that procedure. In the few cases where he has done it, it was because the person learned how to cheat the band. They try to catch people who take in a lot of liquid calories during the screening processs and steer them towards GB rather than the band, but people can also defeat the screening process if they try.

- He said people usually have several fills during the weight-loss period because their innards are changing. (This was only my second since last May) The stomach shrinks, there's less fat pressing against it, hormone changes, etc. So you may have great restriction at one point, but that will probably change over time and you will need another adjustment. (I imagine this is less of an issue for low BMI bandsters. It also makes me wonder how many people have to have adjustments after tummy tuck, lipo, breast implants, other procedures, etc.)

- He said you have to be aware of your restriction level for the rest of your life. This is something that always perplexed me because if you're at your goal weight for years, you'd think your body would be used to eating a certain amount. He said nope, that's not the case. You could be banded for ten years, and the minute you take that band out, the weight will probably start creeping back on. It's not that you'll all of a sudden start bingeing, but your body does realize that there's a lot more room in there than there was before and send that message to your brain. You are likely to increase your caloric intake gradually, without even realizing it. Ten pounds can slowly creep up on you in a year. And if you gain ten pounds a year every year for ten years, you'll eventually wind up right back where you started. (He wasn't trying to scare me or preach gloom and doom, just explain that this is really a lifelong process that doesn't end once you've reached goal weight. Obviously, you don't have to be as vigilant after that point, but don't expect that you can simply have the band removed or forget about it entirely - unless future medicine brings us some great new drug or other weight control method we can use instead of the band)"

Oh, I get it now! That was something I copied and pasted from Sandy, the nurse. I read the whole article but didn't check out the website she suggested at the bottom of her post, yet.

I am doing good today!

I am noticing that I can get more mushies in when I eat them, like eggs than the solids, which I can eat less of.

But, I like eggs for breakfast. I got about 1300 calories in yesterday because my hubby took me out to eat for breakfast a cheese omlette, with bell pepper, onion, mushrooms and a sprinkling of sausage. I ate about 3/4 of a 3 egg omlette.

Today I had my Gano ginseng coffee with plain soy milk at breakfast time.

I am having 2 eggs with mushrooms as a snack.

My goals today is to exercise. I didn't get to yesterday.

How is everyone doing today?

What are you goals?

mysherrijo: let me ask you a question. What happens when you mix flour, and water? You get glue right? Now what did you have at 4:00 p.m.?

Sorry more then a question. Bottom line is all that glue is gonna stick to you. Try less carbs., and more protien. It might help. Shirley

the one site suggests getting hypnosis cds to help with the head hunger. i've always been curious about hypnosis but skeptical about it working in cd form. i'm not going to spend $60+ dollars to find out! LOL!

i checked out the other links, but the information i find here is SO much better!

Well I am doing a little bit better today on eating. I feel like I am pigging out but when I add up my calories I am below 2000 calories. Normally when I pig out I would be eating 4000 calories.

I don't want to eat to the point that I am totally stuffed though which is what I have been doing this whole week. I am eating less but I don't think I am changing my mental habits very well this week.

Just take one day at a time! Try changing one thing a week. Make it goal for yourself. My nutrionist, Dr. Miranda said 1200-1500 max a day. We should be keeping it at 1200 for weight loss. Or else we just won't lose. Protein first is supposed to curb our appetites. And two protein Snacks.

Or a Protein shakes to curb appetite? I looked at my nectar protein shakes that are soooo yummy and they are 0 carbs!!!!!!! I bought samples of every flavor on bariatriceating.com

Fuzzy navel tastes like Tang. strawberry Kiwi tastes good. Smells proteiny but doesn't taste bad.

1 cup is 90 calories, 0 carbs and 23 grams of carbs.

How is everyone doing today?

I have an idea! What if we post our goals, write them down for everyone to see and do them????

I have been doing this very simple thing and it has helped me to get on with the exercise I was struggling with for so long!!!

I have been emailing with Sandy the nurse for quite awhile. She is from Oregon, like me. I value her opinion since she has been banded quite awhile and has been at her goal weight for 3 years.

I plan to order those CD's she talks about. She said they were extremely helpful in helping her with head hunger, planning ahead in social situations, etc. I know from the past, that I can be good all week and go to some sort of social event on the weekend, and blow a weeks worth of good eating. Even with the band, I am sure I will eventually give in to the "goodies and just one won't hurt" type of thinking. One turns into more.

I just have to wait to pay off some of my doctor bills. Even though I paid for the surgery upfront, there is lab work and the psch eval, etc that weren't covered. I can't stand owing money to people. I just wonder if you have to order all of them. I have to go back to the web site and see if they are listed individually, and what is on each one.

Too bad we don't all live closer. We could share them and report back to each other on our opinions of them.
