I was in the ER again today with another kidney infection. I am 3 weeks post-op and this is the second kidney infection I have had in 3 weeks. Did anyone else have this issue after surgery? I am a bit scared and the doctors tell me everything will be fine but I have been diabetic since childhood and I know diabetics have kidney issues sometimes but I've never had any issues with my kidneys until I got this surgery. Any advice or information would be very helpful. Thanks in advance :)

Sounds like you need antibiotics. But here is another thing. An all protein diet causes kidney stones. Its from your kidneys filtering protein. A lot of people I talked to got this. Even I started to develope kidney pain. 3 weeks in myself. You can't do all protein all the time. You need to eat veggies grains and fruits. You will not die or weaken if you do this. Protein Is just to speed the weight loss along before the hunger is unbearable again. And help your organs repair. Honestly I would of been better off buying a big van and camping out doing isopurs for a month. Same results plus I'd have a van. Ha. But I believe I will get a good job and redeem myself financially in a few years. Anyway I wish you well. Vegetarians live so I know the all protein thing is just for weight loss. They say you can't absorb as much but I hardly ate protein prior. And I was fine accept for being a sugar cube.

Thank you very much for the reply and I have been drinking protein drinks for 2 weeks now. I am following a meal plan that my doctor and dietician gave me and it has me drinking 2 protein shakes a day. I drink the Cytosport brand that has 45 grams of protein and I drink half in the morning before work and half in the mid afternoon. I have yet to try any type of veggie or fruit except for applesauce, pearsauce, and tomato soup. Next week I move to soft foods so hopefully I can try more veggies and fruit. Thanks for the info. I was beginning to think I was gonna have kidney failure. It's never a good thing when you're in the ER and the er doc says that your blood work puzzles her. Kinda scared me ya know!

I'm sorry to hear about your kidney infection, I've been getting them since I was 4, it can be very painful. I've gotten kidney stones before from a high protein diet and that was the worst week of my life. The kidney problems have been my biggest fear about the surgery, I'm scheduled for May 6th. Has your doctor said anything about taking cranberry pills, that's what I take now if I start to feel any pain and lots of water. After sleeve I'm worried I won't be able to get enough water in. The antibiotics will clear it up in a few days, but I hope you're able to find a solution to prevent the infection before hand. Best wishes!

Yeah I hear you. Things will get better. Protein only is temporary. In a month it will be diluted from your kidneys but they told me I need 120 grams of protein a day. Its just rediculous. Its just an Atkins diet to make you lose weight initially. I took life science in college. The all protein diet is really really bad long term. It causes kidney failure at the extreme end. It toxifies the body. But don't worry once you start eating normally that will go away. My back killed me the whole time.

Yes my back is killing me to the point that I cannot stand up. This morning in the ER I was given morphine for the pain and it helped but I know it will come back. I know this is temporary but pain truly sucks. Thanks again for the info.

my doctor has never mentioned anything like cranberry pills. is this something we sleevers can take? when I was in the hospital after surgery, I was told pills would be difficult to take so everything I take is in liquid form. cranberry juice is something I have always loved and included in my diet even before surgery but my dietician told me to stop drinking it cause it had to much sugar in it. it's kinda difficult to follow instructions when everyone's instructions contradict each other lol.

I found out today I havea large amount of Protein in my Urine, and they did blood work for Kidney function is this kinda the same thing? I am having lots of pain in my mid to lower back? Good Luck to you.

Too much protein. Lower your protein intake or stop for awhile. Eat veggies fruit and grains.

Yes GoldyGirl, I was told exactly that and the pain in the lower right part of your back is or could be a sign of a kidney infection. I hope everything works out for you and good luck to you as well. Antibiotics will clear it up but the pain sucks on so many levels especially if you're someone like me who refuses to take pain meds unless I am given them in the ER or hospital. I try to use natural forms of healing but sometimes they aren't enough

120g of Protein is extremely high for what's needed post WLS. I'm not going to argue with your doctor, but you sould be fine on 60-80g of protein. The 60-80g of protein isn't just for a phase, but should be the goal in the new nutritional habits you're forming. You don't want the weight loss to be a loss of muscle mass, you want the weight loss to come from fat loss.

Vegetables and grains initially aren't as important as the protein, Fluid and protein first.. Veggies after protein

Sounds like your creatinine level is high.

If I were to guess, you are most likely diabetic also. If so, has your blood pressure, diabetes and any diuretic (for swelling) medication been adjusted?

The Protein in the urine doesn't come from too much protein but in the way the kidneys process it. Think of your kidneys as a strainer. When diabetes attacks the kidneys it tends to make the holes of the strainer wider, allowing the kidneys to dump protein in the urine and not process the protein properly in your body.

I spent five nights in the hospital for this during my pre-op diet, and have my surgery delayed 18 days until my creatinine level returned to normal.

Arghh! This is so frustrating! It feels like you're damned if you do, damned if you don't. Too much protein = kidney problems, not enough proteins and the weight loss will slow. I'll have to talk to my doc about the cranberry pills after sleeve, I love juice also but it is a lot of sugar. I guess in the end the weight loss will have to be more important for better overall health. Both my parents have diabetes and I don't want to go down that road, so I'm trying to take control while I can. I hope that the long term benefits of weight loss help your diabetes, more than the pain from the kidney infections you're dealing with right now. Drink lots of fluid to help keep the infections at bay.

Yes stay watered. Only time without high protein will heal this.
