calcium carbonate vs calcium citrate

Recommended Posts

Any idea if we can switch from calcium citrate to Calcium carbonate after 6 months? Carbonate is a heck of a lot cheaper, especially from costco. Maybe our bodies do not require the citrate any longer? Your thoughts?

My thoughts are.... No!! :)

Hehehe... It think we need to stick to the citrate because of absorption issues that you would still have a year out and beyond

But don't worry I'm sure someone will come along soon and disagree with me :P

Nothing?? Nada?? Well then...

Calciium in supplements are in the form of Calcium carbonate or calcium citrate. Calcium carbonate is inexpensive and more commonly available. Both forms are well absorbed HOWEVER patients with decreased stomach acid (i.e. after gastric sleeve surgery) will absorb calcium citrate more easily. These supplements contain different amounts of ELEMENTAL CALCIUM, which is the actual amount of calcium in the supplement. Calcium carbonate in supplements is only 40% ELEMENTAL CALCIUM. For example if a supplement contains 500 mg of calcium carbonate, only 200 mg is elemental. The other 300 mg is the carbonate ingredient. Calcium citrate is 21% ELEMENTAL CALCIUM but it is better absorbed than calcium carbonate and does not require acid for absorption.

From what I understand, as long as you are on a ppi then you need calcium citrate.< /p>

That made my head hurt....but I think I learned something.

You should be fine with either one! This is another one of those things that is more important for bypass patients to be careful of.

Did this info come from your doctor? Mine disagrees so it will be citrate for me forever.

Well, it would appear we have another gray area. I will stick with citrates, but man my wallet gets lighter after every order.

No, I have not heard of that. I will check out the product on Amazon. Do they taste good? The one thing that my BA Calcium citrates have going for them is that they have a great taste and I like chewing on them. Each bag is $18 though and I am buying a new one every 10 days.

I haven't tried them but want to. Some reviews say they are fabulous and some say that there are horrid.

I get my calcium citrate chews on auto ship from Bariatric Advantage. I eat 4 of them a day and it costs me 20.00 a month. I love them though. They taste like tootsie rolls and are a real treat. It's well worth the money to me.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
