Liquid diet question

Recommended Posts

Hello from Texas,

I have a question. I am a newbie here. My surgery is going to be on November 15th :biggrin1:

My doctor said I have to be on a liquid diet for 2 weeks prior to the surgery but others have said it varies from Dr. to Dr. Were you on liquids for 2 weeks and what did you drink to keep yourself feeling satisfied. I'm concerned because I am hypoglycemic :help:

My doctor is in Arlington, Texas...his name is Dr. Waechter

I am required to be on a liquid diet for 10 days. There are many ideas and recipes that you can find here on the board. There should be a nutrionist working with you at the hospital, especially if you have special health concerns while on the liquid diet!

Many folks do have a liquid diet, either before or after. Don't let yourself get to the point of starving. Keep drinking, as much as possible. Carnation Instant Breakfast, watery Cream of Wheat/Oatmeal, Protein drinks. Put in a "search" or go to the food thread, there are many suggestions.

Thanks for your replies!I think I will call the doctor tomorrow to see what he suggests because of the hypoglycemia and I will take your advice about looking on the food thread for ideas and also ask the doctor about getting a nutritionist as well!

Everyone here has great ideas. This site has helped me out tremendously! Thank you all for your info and support! The preop diet varies from Doctor to Doctor. My boyfriend is going to be banded November 20th by Dr. Zoe Deol in Troy Michigan at William Beaumont Hospital. He had to be on the Optifast diet four weeks prior to the surgery. Five more days to go. This diet consisted of liquid shakes and Protein Bars. So far he's lost 22 pounds. He drinks alot of Water and also Crystal Light is a good one to keep the hunger down. sugar free popicles are a good idea too. hard candy works well also, as well as keeping busy and keeping your mind off food. I am his support person and I have to say that it's been very difficult watching him go through all of this, but I'm very proud of him for giving up the three things he loved most, which were, smoking, food and beer! The Optifast is expensive, and you can only get it through your Nutritionist. Good luck!

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
