International Calling

Hello everyone! I know this next week is going to go by so fast. I am leaving for Mexico next Thursday, surgery Friday! My question is this..I called Verizon today and was told that to use my cell phone to call my children it would cost 99 cents per minute and it cost 50 cents per text. I am going to Star Medica in Juarez, MX which is very close to the boarder. I can live without internet but I can't go a day without talking to my kids! Has anyone purchased an international calling card off the internet? If so which company?

Any advice or suggestions would greatly be appreciated :)

Does the hospital not have wifi? If they do and u have a tablet or maybe even a kindle could u not skype with them?

Ask Verizon about a US plan that will include Mexico. You can change your plan for the time you are gone and change it back when you return. This won't help your data, but I've changed the plans for the salesmen I work with several times for trips they were taking. Check to see if you can turn off international roaming on your phone also.

I grew up in El Paso. Spent tons of time in Juarez. Turn off your international roaming & you will pick up US towers still.

I'm from San Diego and this is true of TJ and Mexicali. You don't lose the US signal as soon as you cross, you can probably get about 5-15 miles in and still get connection from US cell towers.
