I don't know if anyone else has posted on this subject but.... OMG I did my Upper GI yesterday and I would never wish that upon anyone! I had tears running down my face from trying so hard not to spew everywhere and I am not a puker I have been through 3 pregnancies and have never experienced such an overwhelming urge.Does everyone experience this or is it just me?I am just now experiencing the after experience of the body ridding itself and I am so glad she warned me or I would have freaked out lol I am a nurse but I never realized that barium leaves the body that way...

I had my upper GI last week and, although it wasn't pleasant, it wasn't terrible. The barium had a slight sweet citrus taste. For me, the hardest part was rolling to my left, then my right, then over and over so the barium coated my stomach. I have titanium screws in my back and it was difficult. The procedure itself was a breeze for me. Sorry yours was so difficult!

The rolling sucked I had to log roll 360 degrees 3 times which only added to my nausea. It was the texture of the Barium that got to me... I had 2 different kinds of Barium did you? The 1st was like chalky malox with a pudding consistency and that mixed with the crushed CO2 pellets caused most of the nausea. The second was more like liquid malox with berry flavoring which was slightly more tolerable lol

Yes, and the second one was through a straw while I was lying on my stomach. Those crystals they use to blow up your stomach were rough; it was so hard to not burp!

Are you thinking of an endoscopy or EGD? The upper GI we're talking about was just a series of xrays more or less. Fully conscious. What a scary thought to wake up during an endoscopy! I was half awake during a colonoscopy once and I make sure they knock me out good now!

No not the EGD it was definitely not that... It was the Upoer GI I had to do a Barium Swallow while they took various X-rays... Maybe they were a little too thorough I will go through step by step what mine entailed so others can compare.

1. I was given CO2 crystals (think pop rocks)a medicine cup full and was told to throw in back of throat and chase with a medicine cup of Water. This produces gas in order to expand digestive track. They told me not to burp but it makes you feel like you have to so you just have to keep swallowing air. They take 1 X-ray

2. Immmediately after they give me thick Barium to swallow and take more X-rays .

3. They laid table down and ask me to log roll 360 for a total of 3 times to cost stomach with barium. I shift side to side a well and they take more X-rays.

4. They have be lie on stomach and give me the 2nd barium solution the thin one and make me sip with a straw while on my stomach and take more X-rays .

5. They stand me back up and take a few more X-rays .

Keep in mind they went through all of these 5 steps in about 15 minutes so that they could get the best images with the gas and the barium in my stream before it started to dump out. I don't know what anyone else's Upper GI entailed so please share:) I am thinking it was a little overkill on the part of the radiologist.

I am a radiology tech, so I can tell you this is more or less how we do the exam. All radiologists perform it a bit differently though. Some take about 16 x-rays with the fluoroscope and I have seen others do about 50. Was this the UGI post surgery? I am curious about it because I now work at the outpatient VA clinic so we don't get any post op bariatric exams.

It was a Pre Op UGI at San Antonio Military Medical Center( formerly BAMC).The tech said I will go through the same thing the day after sleeping with clear liquid for leak test and then the thin Barium but only sips as opposed to the gulps they made me take for Pre Op.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
