Liver Shrinking Question

Recommended Posts

I am waiting for insurance approval and can possibly have a surgery date in 2-4 weeks. I have been following a 1200 calorie low fat diet for over a month already but now have to do a 1000 calorie, fat free diet, pre op (liver shrinking). It may sound irrational but I am scared to death that my liver won't shrink despite my efforts! At my pre op class we were shown the pictures of a nice liver and a big ole fatty liver (fatty liver was sewn up with no surgery). I asked if people can have a fat liver even while following the diet and the nurse said it was rare but could happen. I should add that I am "that" patient that has quite a few rare and odd things.

Am I the only worry wart here that thinks about this? Have you heard of this happening before?

Hi Carol,

I am 6 days post op and also had a fatty liver. I did a lot of "last dinners" in the months leading up to surgery. My dr put me on a 4 week pre-op diet, but I didn't really buckle down until the last 2 1/2 weeks. During that time we even went on a family vacation and I allowed myself one real meal a day. The rest were shakes. Somehow I lost almost 15 lbs during this time. We all have our turning points when we decide how bad we want this. Mine was on the way home from our trip. We stopped at a dairy queen ( which I love and we don't have any near where we live). I wanted A huge ice scream sundae so bad, but opted for my Protein Shake in the cooler. Thankfully the 15lbs was enough to shrink the liver and get the surgery. I'm now down 28.5 lbs and still recovering. It's easier to follow the plan now because it's hard to finish even one shake. I wish you the best of luck!

I worried myself sick before the surgery :) i gave up all carbs and would work out like crazy so I could deplete all the glycogen in my liver. I lost 10lbs before surgery on the two week preop diet. Every thing will be fine. Good luck!

My doctor told me I could follow the pre op diet- or follow any other plan where I was losing weight. I've done a pretty good job of losing on my own- so I would say as long as you lose some weight you should be fine.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
