Fibromyalgia And Surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone... I have fibromyalgia as well as an unidentified autoimmune disorder. I was curious if any of you who have had surgery already (who also have these issues) had any issues with flares because of the stress of the surgery?

I also have Fibro with auto immune. I was on Plaquenil prior to surgery (6/29). I haven't noticed a "flare" but I do think that the pain is more for those of us with these conditions. I was not able to get up and walk the same day but made myself the next day so I could get out of the hospital. Everyday has gotten better and better. I think we all have our things we have to walk through with this journey. I had the pain but haven't had any problems getting my fluids and Protein in. I am glad I had the surgery though I wouldn't want to be where I was last week again. I guess that was one of the hardest parts for me while in the hospital was I expected to be up and walking immediately but my body just didn't do that. Do you have a surgery date yet?

Thank you so much for replying! I still have a couple months left till they can submit my paperwork for approval. I too am on plaquenil. Did you have to stop it for surgery?

Yes I did. I started weaning myself 2 weeks out and was completely off 1 week pre-op. I haven't restarted it yet.

And you are doing ok? I'm so nervous about stopping it.

Had immediate leg swelling, increased pain, and the Mylar rash pretty bad but post surgery I haven't noticed it anymore. I will go back to Rheumy before restarting it. This was my first time to come off it since she started me on it almost a year ago. Have you been on it a while?

Yeah getting close to a year and I've never been off of it. I ran out once for a couple of days and it wasn't fun.

I have fibromyalgia, but take no meds for it. Even still, my Dr did not seem pleased during the initial visit when I mentioned the fibro. I am hopeful it won't cause any problems.

Jusstice: I hope not either. Mine didn't seem too concerned...

My surgeon spoke with my Rheumy. He wanted to make sure the autoimmune wasn't an issue with my organs. The hesitance you may feel from the surgeon may be stereotyping that Fibro gets sometimes. Don't be discouraged or take it personally people that don't walk your path may never understand. Best of luck!

I have Ankolysing spondylitis and fibromyalgia. I am 7 weeks post- op and 40 lbs down. I am in a flare right now and Its severity is much less than in the past. I have not taken any related meds since surgery. Some days have been tough, but not near as tough as before with more weight and inactivity. I have had organ involvement before too. The two biggest thing I can tell you us this.

Start washing your stomach and under your breasts with Hibiclens one week before surfery to help prevent infection. Then use 2-3 times a week after - so you dont get an infection. Because our immune systems are broken, I also had a terrible severe allergic reaction to the surgical glue tgey used to clise. It went into my entire body and I ran higher fevers, had to chug the Benedryl and it made me feel really sick. I strongly suggest eitger making them do a patch test on you a couple of weeks before or not using it at

Thanks for the tip. I always have issues with adhesives and band-aids, so I'll keep that in mind. BTW- great progress!

I have CFS and Fibromyalgia. I'm 2 1/2 months post surgery and doing pretty well. I've had my days that are hard, but overall not much different than before surgery. I've had more pain in my hips (which Doc believes is due to losing weight and carrying myself differently). I've only had one flare and that was after I took my kids on vacation and overdid it. I'm sure you'll be okay. :)

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
