I have a Surgery Date!

I've confirmed a surgery date of 10/3/2011 with Dr. Aceves for my revision. I know that's still a couple of months out, but if there is anybody else going that week, let me know.

Even though I've been considering a revision for three months now, it all feels rather sudden. My band has been completely unfilled (sprung a leak) since May 2011. I've had a CT scan (no erosion) and an upper Endoscopy (slight erosion of my esophagus due to reflux) in an effort to get my revision approved by Insurance (HealthNet.) But no luck. Although HealthNet covers revisions, the Medical Group I belong to does not! Grrrrrrr.

I've scheduled two weeks off work for recovery. I've never revealed that I had a lapband and I'm not telling work about the sleeve either. As close as I am to everyone, it's just not a part of my life I want to share. I don't want everybody's "encouragement" when I'm losing and I certainly don't want their scrutiny when I indulge a little! All they know is that my weight has fluctuated a lot in the past three years and they've all been very kind not to mention my current gain.

I’m unhappy that I have to go through surgery again, but I’m relieved that I have a plan. I’ve been through recovery before, so I (think) I know what I’m in for ….. and I’ve done the fasting, mushies and Protein drinks before, so no surprises there.

I’m glad I’ve got this board to read when I need support.

Congrats on your surgery date Mim! I'm a band to sleeve revision as well, with my date looming on 9/6. I have been lucky that the only problem I've had with my band is just that it failed. My surgeon told me at my last appointment that they're finding up to 40-50% of bands are failing so at least I know now it wasn't just me. Feel free to check in any time you'd like with questions as I'll be about a month ahead of you. I can keep you in the loop as to what to expect.

Thanks Eddie,

I wish I could have my surgery sooner......like tomorrow! But, October 3rd was the best choice considering my time off work and my son's school break.

Best of luck to you for a speedy recovery!

Mim, congratulations on your surgery date! Oct. 3 will be here beofre you know it. I can't wait to read all about your progress.

Be well,

Niki

Congrats on getting the date set!

What made them decide to do the CT scan? I have had a band for 10 years that is slipped. They did an endoscopy and told me I didn't have any erosion. I am curious how erosion is typically diagnosed.

Hi Jane,

Actually, I see now that I didn't post correctly......... I had a CT scan to check the band for position (no slippage) and an Endoscopy to check for erosion. My understanding is that the Endoscopy can tell there's been erosion if they see the band inside the stomach.

okay, <sigh of relief>

So, when they said no erosion after that endoscopy I know that is the final word!

my band is slipped about half way down the stomach, can be seen clearly on the floroscopy so I didn't need to do the CT.
