slim fast

Hello all,

Just wondering if Slim Fast was something that was okay to drink/use after surgery. Not right after surgery but maybe a few weeks out? If not, what are other "good" premade shakes that are some-what affordable that you would recommend?

Thanks!

Hi, NO check out the label, I believe last time I read the label it has too many carbs. You should NOT have more than 20 carbs a day. Suzanne

I think there are better products for you to choose than Slim Fast, products with fewer carbs and more Protein. I really liked the EAS Advantage Carb Control which has 17 grams of protein after surgery. It didn't seem nearly as sweet as other Protein drinks and the sweetness was really cloying to me. Right after surgery I also liked the Pure Protein Drink from costco, but now I find it too thick and don't like the texture. The EAS drinks are four for $4.99 at my local store. Make sure you are looking for protein drinks in the pharmacy section of the store rather than the grocery section. Just one word of warning - what I liked prior to surgery was very different than after surgery. I had stocked up on some things which are now still sitting in my cupboard.

Yes, as Marie said there are probably slightly better choices but in the long run I don't really think it matters. Slim-Fast is cheap and readily available. You could do a lot worse. Just don't slam a few a day and use it at first for a liquid replacement, after a few months slack off and just use them as a Meal Replacement a few times a week.

I personally use Boost! nutritional drink. Smaller portions and the taste isn't quite as yucky as a few others I tasted.

I think as long as you like it and can tolerate it, then drink it. Slim Fast is still one of my favorites. It does come in Low Carb version if you can find it. They usually have coupons and good deals on it too.

Rule of thumb, don't buy tubs or crates of anything pre-surgery because chances are you won't like them post op. Just buy samples and once you have surgery figure out what you do like and what you don't. The liquids phase is only a few weeks anyway, your #1 concern at first will be getting all your fluids in. Whatever you can tolerate is what you should be drinking. :)

I used to love Slim fast before they changed the formula to the Optima one. Now I love Syntrax nectar Chocolate Truffle protein powder mixed with skim milk. Very low carbs and tastes really chocolatey. You can get samples and try before buying a whole tub.

There is a Low Carb SlimFast canned shake now that has 6 grams of carbs and 20 g. protein. BUT, it may not be the kind of protein that we need. Check with your nut.

I used the sugar free slimfast and added 1/3 cup of dry milk for added protein. I could only find chocolate and french vanilla. I added a tablespoon of sugar free Torina flavor syrups to change of the flavors. I drank these after surgery until I was able to get all of my protein from food. I could not tolerate the other protein drinks after surgery. My nut said I could had up to 60-90 carbs per day....Everyone's has different opinions on this. Again I just used these until I was on normal food and getting all of my protein from that. Good Luck.
