Been awhile VST..Well had my VSG on May 10th it went well but I had trouble eating and consuming enough Water so I was very dehydrated, I had acid reflux from H*** - found out that the forgot to prescribe my Pantoprazole to help me with that so for my 1st Post OP appt. the day before I had noticed yellow jaudice in my eyes. Went to my appt. spoke with the surgeon and told him what I had been experiencing for the last 13 days and he recommended that I go to ER for a few hours and have them put and IV in me for a few hours and get some fluids back in me so I wouldn't feel so exhausted so I did that and I was feeling alot better however, they started doing ultrasounds and X rays because I told them I had problems eating anything and only being able to take two sips of water and then I hear that horrible GERRGLING sound. They took samples of my urine everything next thing you know a POST OP tuned into a 6 hour visit in the ER and I never left the hospital for 8 days!! End result I had 3 ERCP attempts (going down my throat to examine and suck out bile and sand/stones from gallbladder) however liver elevations where still high (peribellum) so they ended up removing my Gallbladder! It was the worst time ever being suddenly told that each day that we need to keep you another day and not being able to go home to my family. I don't wish that on anyone! And even after they removed it I still need to go back and have another ERCP done because during the removal of my gallbladder the surgeon said there are still some stones in my bile duct that need to be removed that may cause a blockage so I have to go back as an out patient this time and have that done! Can't say I have had the best start! :-((

Rapid weightloss can trigger the gallbladder to produce excess stones. I have heard of several people that needed their gallbladder out within the first year post op. Some had theirs removed at the same time as surgery and some (like me) had theirs removed pre surgery.

Good you got in and removed as sometimes the stones can travel to the pancreas and cause a whole lotta problems with acute pancreatitis (not very nice). Sounds like your doc is being careful by going in again to remove the last of the stones.

I'm sorry, I know a sudden 8 days in the hospital that you haven't planned for had to suck. It's a shame you also needlessly suffered with acid for 13 days before gettung an rx for a ppi. That's when you needed it the most!!

Yeah, a lot of drs do remove the gall bladder and/or hiatal hernias at the time they do the sleeve, to save you from another procedure. I had my GB removed a few yrs back.

I hope you're feeling better now and can start focusing on the more positive aspects of being sleeved and losing your weight. I am a wk behind you, and it keeps me busy trying to get protein in. Good luck for a more uneventful recovery!

I haven't had VSG - I have AGB & am here researching a revision. But I had to have my gallbladder out almost a year to the day that my band was put in. Mine was a much simpler outpatient procedure though. From what I can tell, MOST people who lose significant amounts of weight lose their gallbladder at some point. In fact when my AGB was done my surgeon basically said "See you soon" -- he was right. Poor little gallbladders go all wonky without much for the bile to do.

Sounds like you have had a rough start. Re: gallbladder - over 33% of all WLS patients need to have their gallbladder removed. This is one of the side effects of rapid weight loss. My surgeon perscribed pills to help prevent gallbladder attacks for the first three months. Think the generic name is Urisol? Happy to report, event though I prescheduled gallbladder removal surgery in Jan 11 (VSG in Sept 2010) I cancelled it since I had no ill effects. Hope you have a smoother recovery from here on out.

For those of you who have had your gall bladder out, have you had any issues with gas, irregular stools or dare I say chronic diarrhea? I am really against having my gall bladder out because it seems almost everyone I know who has had it out has reported this problem. It sounds like the OP had no choice in getting the gall bladder out, but I would personally only want it out as a last resort. Fortunately, I had an ultra sound done as part of my pre-op and I am clear and I had my original WLS 13 years ago.

Yes I do have trouble with gas. I did have a lot of problems with diarrhea

until I started taking Iron regularly. Now I have the opposite problems.

I didn't recognize the gall bladder pain and waited too long to go to the ER and got pancreatitis. Talk about painful!

I've had chronic diarrhea ever since I had my gall bladder out almost 3 years ago. I also can't eat eggs anymore.

Question - did you get Gallbladder meds after your VSG? My Dr started me on meds 7 days post op and I have to continue for 6 months.

Had my gall bladder out years ago. Some gas but not too bad. No diarrhea. Milk and eggs are fine. Some people have problems with fat intolerence after surgery but I did not experience that.
