I am considering the Sleeve. I am in the diet pre-approval phase. My debate has been between Band, Sleeve and waiting for Plication (which sounds creepy to fold in your stomach). Anyway, I have heard over and over about post-sleeve patients always being cold. Protein, good blood work, yet still cold. It can NOT just be weight loss. I've read that Ghrelin helps regulate temperature. If so, wouldn't cutting out the stomach part that has most of that cause you to be forever cold? Trade big backside for big coats and gloves in the house? What about the patients that had the other part of this sugery even back as the 80's, is this a known problem with them as well?

Interesting. I can certainly confirm being cold very often now. Never used to be the case. I've always assumed it was the loss of fat insulation and that still seems the most likely reason to me.

I've never heard another reason suggested until your post related to the loss of Ghrelin. I still would not change a thing. I'd much rather deal with being more cold natured than with all the other issues I had pre sleeve. But your question is interesting none the less. I hope you get a response.

When I saw this question, a light came on. I am never cold. I don't even run heat in the winter. My family always complains that I keep my house freezing.

I had VSG almost 6 weeks ago and I have been and ice box! I am running the heat, sleeping with 2 comforters ... it's crazy. I had no idea that the surgery had something to do with it.

I asked a DIFF doctor about the cold issue and he said it was lack of insulation, but I don't buy it. Somewhere i read a forum of a woman at a business where 30 of them had had WLS over the past few years, all cold. And the cold seems crazy cold, blankets, heat, socks, etc. Some has to be shock of surgery, some weight loss, vitamins..but what else? I wondered if it was less on the experimental Plication surgery, but there doesn't seem to be enough issue.

I am 14months out and have lost 160lbs. I am ALWAYS freezing. however, on the upside, over the summer i wasnt as hot as i used to be. I dont know if its related to the surgery or the weight loss...eitherway, I wouldnt change a thing. This surgery has helped me so much and I've never been happier.

But, intereting question. Im eager to hear a Dr's thoughts on this.

Well I'm not always cold - yet - with only 70 lbs down but I am not hot any more. Used to ALWAYS turn the fan on at work, I no longer need it. I used to sweat in bed incessantly which left the bed smelling funky, which again doesn't happen.

Let me put it this way, better to be thin and cold that fat and hot and sweaty, at least you can cover up with something whereas I could only take so much off to keep cool.

I am COLD!!! I am a believer that it is the loss of Grehlin (SP?). I still have over 120 lbs to lose so I know I still have adequate fat insulation. I was one of those always extra hot people. Never using a jacket in winter, only sleeping with a sheet, A/C temp kept at 68 degrees, sweating all the time.

One other explanation to no longer being hot is that my blood pressure is now normal after losing these 87 lbs. But that dont explain the extreme coldness I feel. I now sit with a heating pad, wear a sweater, use throw blankets, and sleep with an electric blanket. That being said, I would not trade this for not having surgery.

We are all allowed our opinions on what we think, however, i do tend to lean towards the losing of fat causing us to be chiller then normal. . . sorta like if you take R50 insulation and insulate the attic, your house will be very well insulated preventing heat from escaping and keeping it warm. . . strip away the R50 and put R10, you'll feel the difference for sure. . . i'm sure the body is simular. . . all these years of R50 we were hot and muggy and uncomfortable, now we strip it away to R10 and we definately feel the difference. . . just my anology. . . CHEERS! (where are my mitts )

I would agree that later on, this might be true, but many people here are cold before they lose much weight. My hands were freezing when I got home from the hospital, not a usual problem for me.

So then, your theory on this would be what???

Today I asked my WLS Dr. about it, I told him (well basically my question), he said, "We don't know really why that happens, but it also happens with the people who've had the old 2 part surgery that this was derived from (i can't remember what it was). Dang. He said that he doesn't hear about it often (I am in Texas, this might be a good thing) and that though, it doesn't go away, people get used to it...

Ugh. I was hoping he'd say it went away in 5 years or something..

(Granted some is insulation and Vitamins, but I literally may not choose this surgery for this reason, cold is painful for me)
