Thin liquid diet??

Is the diet required? My surgery is on the 8th of January and my nutrition class is on the 4th and nobody has mention a liquid diet yet.... should I do the diet just as a precaution?

You will be on only liquids after surgery. You just as well practice on what you will eat. You should have Protein shakes on hand. You might be swelled after surgery. And the more weight you take off prior to surgery the better for you. It also makes a statement to your surgeon that you care.

Best wishes

I was told medically speaking, doing the liquid diet shrinks the fatty liver and makes it easier for the surgeon to work around in there, less complications so yes, why not start protein shakes.

Thats correct. It does shrink liver & helos w/weight loss. Id read that in several books but my surgeon didn't require it. When I asked him why not, he sai d he didn't want to place too many restrictions on his patients. Told me I could do it if I wanted to. I did a modified version for the week before.

But you should call your surgeon and see what they want you to do. You wilk hear it over & over. That "each surgeon is different".

If they haven't mentioned it it's most likely not required. I had a 2 week liquid diet of protien shakes my dr supplied. Optifast. 5 per day (800 calories) and all the caffeine free tea, coffee or water I wanted. Sugar free Popsicles and sodium free broth was also allowed. I lost 22 lbs... Shrunk my liver down to nothing and had a very successfull surgery. It also prepared me for the 2 weeks of liquids which followed the surgery

I had no pre-op diet at all, but call in to be sure. Better to check than be cancelled.

I also was told I did not need to go on pre op diet, prior to surgery, but I put myself on it, about 3 days before, yr surgeon knows best, but it didn't hurt me, good luck x
