Diet Prior To Surgery?

I thought it might be interesting to learn about the different types of diets being required before surgery.

My program requirements paperwork indicates I will need to be on a 1400 calorie diet at least two weeks prior to my surgery. That sounds like a lot of calories to me, but I will get the full details this Wednesday.

Today, I went to costco and bought some more Premier shakes. We do not live near a Costco, so I had planned to stock up for those post-surgery days when I will need to get 60 grams of Protein daily from a liquid diet. I was surprised to discover Costco now has both chocolate and vanilla available. The vanilla box was imprinted with "new and improved," so maybe that's why vanilla was unavailable the last time I shopped at Costco.

  • I received the instruction email today from my surgeon and time of surgery. 6pm! April 2. Wow! 6pm! surgeon will be exhausted by then! I will be staying overnight for sure, I assume. He wants

  • I wish we all lived close enough to go on a shopping expedition together. That would be a blast.

  • My surgery date is April 2, and I'm on day 3 of the pre op diet. Day 1-7 is 2 proetin shakes per day that are 200 caleries or less, and have 15g of Protein or more and a small dinner that has no more

Well it is Day 3 and i must say this morning I had the worst Headache. On yesterday my meals included a Yoplait Greek Yogurt smoothie, soup and cabbage which were good. On today:

Breakfast: 2 egg whites omelette with spinach and salsa (10 grams of protein)

Snack: Muscle Milk vanilla Creme Protein Shake (25 grams of protein)

Lunch: salad with fat free french, oranges and vegan soup

Snack: Yoplait Greek Yogurt Smoothie whey Protein (30 grams of protein)

Have no idea about dinner but it will probably be vegetables. I am only to have three meals a day with two Protein Shakes in between. However, starting next Wednesday after my preop appointment, I think I am going to move to clear liquid for the remainder just to make sure. However, I got on the scale today and already down 4 pounds!!

We can and WILL do this!!!

Got my pre-op diet today and start on March 30th. Averages 850 cal and 95 gms of Protein.

Daily

3 Protein Shakes daily

2 Protein Bars daily - I get the shakes and bars from my clinic - their requirement and they're good too!

3 oz of lean protein

1 small - med piece of fruit or 1 cup of items like melon, berries, grapes, etc.

unlimited non-starchy vegetables

64 oz of liquid (10 cal or less per 8 oz serving)

additional free items include:

sugar free Jell-o

Sugar free popsicles

spray butter

non-stick cooking spray

garlic / herbs / spices with no sodium

Day 2 wasn't too good but Day 3 will be much better.

hoot hoot!

This is Day 1 of my two week liquid protein 800 calorie diet. Ive been awake for about 5.5 hours and haven't cracked yet! Lol.

My head is being aweful. I don't like Taco bell much, never had. Why oh why would I give my pinky nail for Taco Bell right now? This is going to be a long two weeks if my brain doesn't knock it off. I can do this! White knuckle it if I have to.

Yay for you!

LOL...I experienced unusual cravings at first. I was expecting to yearn for chocolate candy, pizza, and French fries but wanted popcorn instead. Strange, I know. You can do it, and hopefully, tomorrow will be better.

It is interesting to read about all the different pre-op diets that people are on. I don't start mine until April 12 (circled on the calendar). I am allowed the following:

Breakfast: Protein Shake with 2 servings of no sugar added fruit (fresh or frozen) which can be in the shake or not.

lunch same as Breakfast

Dinner: lean cuisine or weight watcher dinner

2 additional servings of skim milk, juice, fruit and a few other things that are on the list

Unlimited no sugar items like Jello, popcicles

I am easing into it and have started the Protein Drinks in the morning. I have been putting frozen strawberries or raspberries in the chocolate and it is really yummy. We will see how I feel after 2 weeks of them 2x a day.

There is a doctor sitting in front of me eating skittles. I told her I would chase her down and sit on her for them. The good news is that day one is over and I only have 13 left to go.

Oooh. Popcorn sounds good. Nevermind that. Nothing tastes as good as healthy feels......... Right?

smmrsue you just keep telling me that!

I will!

GOOD cuz I need it. This pre-op diet SUCKS. If I was any good at dieting I would be a skinny B already, AND I know it's all mental. Like I'm having a hard time losing 10 lbs because I've been told I have to.

I'm pouting today.

I so agree with you!!!! The pre-op diet sucks bad but it's almost over and then we are on to the POST-OP diet!!!! Yay for us. LOL

on day 5 of an all liquid diet, 3 protien shakes a day and cream soups yogurt and sugar free pudding. not to be crude or anything but has anyone had problems with gas on the protien shakes and what can be done about it?

I jumped on the scale to give me motivation. I lost 5 lbs since yesterday! Which is good because I was about to cave. Now I have the motivation to get me through this day. I don't expect to lose 5 lbs everyday but it's a good start.

Pre op diet is aweful, but it's temporary. There is an end in sight.
