I must admit that I have been busy trying to get things for the doctor and working.I calculated my BMI and it is beyond comprehending.I knew I was above the requirements for the insurance company.I spoke to a lady with Belite yesterday.She said based on my BMI of 67 I may need to consider the sleeve.It was just a major reality moment.I am just at a point in my life that I NEED this surgery.It is not a want.I hope my insurance comes through for me.

Does your insurance cover a sleeve? Some don't. If they cover a band, they should cover a bypass. With a BMI of 67, you certainly can benefit from any of the procedures.

btw: My starting BMI was 63, and I've done very well with the band. Research all WL surgeries 2 make sure you get the one that will work best for you.

when i first started this process last year, i had a bmi of 65. my surgeon, up until the hours before surgery, wanted me to reconsider and get gastric bypass. i wasnt sure my insurance would even cover me for the band because of my high bmi. i had my band done last week. at the time of surgery it was under 60.

if you have a 3 or 6 month waiting period, make it count! your bmi is 67 now, but if you start to adopt the lifestyle changes you will need after surgery, it will help you lose before surgery.

Your BMI does not indicate whether or not you'll be more successful with other methods of WLS. The reason they're telling you that you may be a better sleeve or bypass patient is because VS and Bypass typically lose their initial weight quite quickly and if you lose 50% of your excess weight, the surgery is considered a success. What they don't do is follow these same people for more than 2 years...and that's where their 'success' statistics fall apart. Talk to both groups of people and they'll tell you that at about a year out, the 'honeymoon' is over and you're in the same boat as the band people. Meaning if you don't 'work' that VS or bypass, you won't continue to lose and it's very possible you'll gain it all back and then some.

On paper, bypass and VS look like better options. The reality is that they're all the same. They all require *work* - using self-control, changing poor eating habits, etc. So whichever you choose, understand that it's not better because it's easier.

my starting BMI was 56 and I never even considured the sleeve. I am happy with the band and even though I have a lot to lose I know that I can do it if I use the band as a tool and eat right and work out. I agree that you should research the different surgeries but I don't want you to think that the band is not an option. BTW, I had 3 months before my surgery and did not waste a moment on "Last dinners" or lazy days. I lowered my BMI to 51 and lost 30 pounds while waiting. It is amazing how much easier it is to diet and excersize when you have hope in site. For me hope was knowing that soon I would have an aid that would help the weight I was losing stay off and I would be able to get off the roller coaster ride of weight loss.

Might just be too much weight to control w/ the lapband. I think the sleeve and gastric bypass have more built in control than the band does.
