Good Morning everyone;

As part of my Pre-Op count down, I had my wife take my picture. I was undressed except for my briefs. We took 4 pics, Front, Back and 2 sides.

All I can say is WOW!! I really didn't realize that is how I looked. I guess I have had a way of not looking in the mirror very critically. When I have seen other obese people, I would think to myself, "Don't they know what they look like? Don't they use a mirror?

If you have not done it, I would recommend a "Photo Shoot". Great motivation. I will keep these pictures to my self. When discouraged, or tempted to cheat, that's when I will look them over.

Have you done your pictures?

Regards

Hal

I have done the shoot and located photos of me from the year. It's amazing what self-denial I have.

I did not do the pre-op photos or the pre-op measurements. I know how bad I looked and felt about myself and never want to see that again. I do have a very obese looking pic from 2008 that I could use if I ever get brave enough to post before/after pics.

I didn't do any real before pics. I did take one of myself in teh bathroom mirror right before I left for surgery, but it doesn't show much because I've got my warm up jacket on.

I didn't do any planned before pics because I was too embarassed if you want to know the truth. I had avoided the camera for so many years and I didn't want to see just how big I had gotten. And, I was a little afraid this surgery wouldn't help me and there would be no after photos.

That said now I'm sorry I didn't do before pics because there is a noticible difference. I love seeing before and afters of others, it is so encouraging and it would be great to have my own too.

I avoid cameras also. I'm always the one taking the pics. When I was a size I felt good at, I was quite the photo ham, so I'm sure I'll be hamming it up again.

I've heard too many say they wish they had taken before measurements and photos, so I defo plan to do it.

I know exactly what you mean! When I was younger and more Athletic, I loved pictures, but when I started putting on weight the photos were less frequent, now I use excuses to avoid them, I think most my friends/family get the hint and don't push it, thankfully!

I also plan on the before and after photos/measurements, it's the best way to visually see your progress!

I'm having my surgery this Friday and can't wait to start posting pictures! I talked with my b/f on this exact thing last night. I want to document every month! I'm just very excited. I'm excited about looking better, feeling better, being able to climb a set of stairs with out filling like I'm going to have a heart attack. Playing with my kids with having to take a break after five minetes. To be able to wear "cute" clothes and not the ones that hide the belly rolls. That felt good just saying that!

I took pictures this past wknd in a new one piece bathing suit. Normally I wear the shorts, or the 'dress' type bathing suit, but not this time. I took front, back and side to side pictures using the mirror. Too embarressed to have someone take them of me.

Boy was I like you! It's funny how I look in the mirror every day, but I never really *looked*. I posted them on my computer in a folder so I can view them again. This was the motivation I needed.

My surgery is in 2 wks, and I can't *weight* (haha had to do it!) until I start to lose.

i didn't realize how heavy i really look until i was sitting in an exam room at my husband's dr. and saw myself in a full length mirror. what a surprise that was. i felt alot smaller than i looked. when i was an average weight in high school i felt heavier than i really looked. it's amazing how our mind works.

Totally scary how we have such a distorted self image...I am one of those former skinny people and never thought of myself as "Obese" last couple years of going to the river though that realization has become Crystal Clear. Good luck.

I do plan on taking pictures even though it totally disgusts me to do it. But I do want to be able to look back after I lose all of my weight to see how far I've come.

WOW what a change!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks!!

And folks just starting out; take those pictures no matter how disgusted you are by your body. Nobody has to see them until you are ready.

I got an unbelievable high yesterday when I pasted my before picture next to my after. So high I did them in reverse order by accident.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
