I am considering having the lap-band surgery. I have been to my consultation and I have been to my pre-op appointment. I am just waiting for them to call to schedule my appointment for surgery. I am not afraid of the surgery at all I am terrified of the throwing up after. I am seriously scared to throw up all the time and I am considering calling off the surgery plans because of this. Please help me get past this fear. Please tell me your stories!:tongue2:

I was just banded on May 21st, so I am still new to this. I have only thrown up once. It was in the recovery room right after they told me I was discharged. I had just finished sipping on some ice Water and had taken a dose of liquid pain meds. When they said, I could go home, I jumped up to get changed and as soon as I was standing I knew I had gotten up too quickly. I instantly became dizzy and threw up the water and medicine I had just drank. Since then, I haven't had any problems. My doc gave me a prescription for Zofran for nausea, but I haven't taken any since the day after surgery. As long as you follow your post-op instructions and don't eat/drink too much too fast, you should be okay. Listen to your body. For example, right now it's time for me to eat, but I can tell by the way that I feel, that I will get sick if I try to eat some Soup or drink a shake. So I am just SLOWLY sipping water right now to stay hydrated. Good Luck!!

Having Lapband doesn't mean that you'll be throwing up each day. This really only happens when you eat or drink too much or too quickly. Follow your nutritionists advice. Have small meals cut into small pieces, and chew chew chew. Sip your water or whatever you're drinking, don't gulp it, and you'll be fine.

Listen to your body and follow the rules and it's rare that you'll find yourself throwing up each day.

Take the anti-nausea medication they offer you in the hospital. Other than dry heaves from the anesthesia right after surgery, I have never thrown up!!

I think its worth throwing up a couple times a month to be skinny, besides its not really like when you have a stomach bug type throwing up.

If I eat too fast, too much or don't chew properly (my fault and totally preventable) then I start to slime and my stomach makes this mucus plug thing, I go in the bathroom, take a drink of Water, bend over and hack it out, one heave and its over. Not pleasant but not too bad either. Defiantly not worth staying overweight for.

Hmmm, throwing up is never good but totally within your control. I was banded April 29th and "spit" up some water I had yesterday because I didn't chew the bite of sandwich I had enough - lessen learned. I have never thrown up before then but I also have not had my first fill yet. My biggest challenge is to slow my eating down and chew smaller bites. From what I've heard, these are the most common reasons for throwing up. The best advice I have received/heard on this website is to take your time with everything, particularly for the first month after surgery. I have had no problems at all either with the surgery or after - no pain meds needed etc. Everyone is different. Go into this with a positive mind and know the surgery is a tool, you need to do the rest. Good luck!

I was banded May 13, 2010. I have gotten nauseous once, but so far I haven't thrown up. Just sip fluids slowly. I have gotten some good advice off of this forum for when I can eat solid food. Chew Chew Chew is what I'm being told! Take small bites too! Good luck!

I have a year's prescription for phenergren cream in case of real nausea...and orders to have flu shots each year (haven't had flu in 28years), and to call my lapband doctor imediately if I have real nausea. But the spitting up...PB-ing...that occurs more commonly when I eat too fast, or a too large bite gets stuck - only twice so far, and my carelessness both times...is more like baby spitup. It comes from the pouch NOT from the larger stomach like it would with illness. it seems to be part of a learning curve...makes you think "well, I'll NEVER do that again". Not anything to be terrified of.
