Pretty sure that wasn't in my surgeon's rules but I've heard people talk about that. I use them in my (occasional) adult beverages and anytime I blend a protein shake.

I use them in the big iced tea I get from Tim Horton's and sometimes in a protien shake. I was never told not to, though I have heard others say that they were told not to use straws.

I'm fairly sure the reason we're not supposed to use straws after surgery is because doing so can create too much air in the stomach.

I went to my pre-op nutrition class yesterday and that is what they told us. No more straws. They said, might as well get used to not using them now. When using straws you swallow too much air for the new small stomach pouch.
