First Fill Question

Hi,

I am 3 1/2 weeks post op (lap band) and had my first fill today. My doctor injected 3cc of saline into my port and it went great. However, he told me to be on a liquid diet x2 days and then a "mushy food" diet the next two.

Why? I'm starvin'

Anyone else get these instructions?

Anyone else eat even though they got these instructions?

Thanks...

I had my first fill on Tuesday. My instructions were for liquids Tuesday, purees Wednesday, mushies Thursday and then normal diet Friday.

It was funny how hungry I was on Tuesday night. I knew that the liquids was for only one day, but heck I thought that I was going to not make it. I would have thought that my body would have gotten used to liquids by now!

My doctor doesn't have a mushy rule post-fill---and for the first two fills I was grateful for this.

HOWEVER, he does caution us to listen carefully to our bodies---and let's just say that my body didn't start talking, after Fill #3, until I already was in pain.

The recommendation is made because filling the band exerts pressure on the stomach, and can result in swelling that causes the stoma to become smaller than it will eventually be, once the swelling calms down.

As you approach restriction, this swelling can make it much more likely that you'll have a stuck episode.

I empathize with the hunger--I had no noticeable difference after my first two fills, and would have been tempted to gnaw the legs off my kitchen chairs if I had ot stick to liquids!

(But now, after fills, that is all I want!)

What are you including in your liquid diet? You can make protein into liquid by placing meat, cheese, cottage cheese, eggs etc into a blender and then thinning the mixture with chicken broth. Also many soups qualify as liquid. I used cream of chicken and added cheese, and thinned it with chicken broth. You probably need to get some real nutrition in there to fight the hungries.... There is more hunger on liquids no matter what because they slip right on through so there isn't much satisfaction. Hang in there, it will pass by quickly!!!!
