I got my first fill today. my doctor said my band holds a max of 10 CCs. Today he gave me 4 CCs.

What concerns me is that he said wants me to come back in a few weeks for 1 more CC and then again in another few for an addtional 1 CC=a total of 6CCs. IN TOTAL, He wants to stop fills after 6CCs.

This concerns me because I just read another person's thread where she said she STARTER at 6CCs and just got 4 more? it seems like alot of people have said they are up to 8ccs at least?

what is the average amount? or where did u feel adequate restriction?

THANKS!

I started with an empty band, and got my 3rd fill yesterday. I have a total of 4.2 cc and have definite restriction. Remember, everyone is different.

You probably have a different band than those at 8. I have a Realize band that holds 12cc and I'm up to 8.5. They told me most patients reach restriction between 8 and 9 so I'm crossing my fingers that this will give me restriction past the swelling stage.

As for stopping after 6cc's. If you reach 6 cc's and can still eat to excess and are still hungry, hold his toes to the fire for more fills. My guess is that most of his patients reach restriction at 6...but we are all different. My fills were about 2 weeks apart and my first was 3cc, second was 3cc, third was 2cc but they had to remove 1 because it was too much (due to swelling). Since then they've been .5cc fills and, even though I needed another fill 2 weeks after the .5cc, if they had put in 1cc, I would have had to have an unfill because I'm getting close and the swelling has a deeper impact.

I have to say that my experience with this band and my care provider have been markedly different than many here, but I have a feeling it's because my doctor has a band and has personal experience...something a book can never teach.

I had 4 at the time of surg. and then 6 wks post op we did 3 all at once.. BIG mistake for me. I couldn't even get down Water it hurt so bad... woke myself up puking and had to go like that for 2 days til they could unfill 1 cc. I was dehydrated, sore and very scared by then.

That 1cc was put back in 4 weeks after that 1st fill. So although they have put in 7cc's, they can only re-aspirate 5 of them.. so I read like I have 5cc in and I think I am still a bit too tight but ok with that. I think this is as much as I will ever have in at a time. I still can't eat a lot of meat unless it's ground meat and 1-1.5C of soft food is as much as I can take in at a time and often urp up anything over 1/2C on truely solid foods.

Everybody is SO different..it is very much a personal thing. I saw another woman on here who hit her sweet spot at 4cc that were put in at the time of surg. so no actual fills post op .. and she was doing great.

By the way... I am a 10cc band.

I too started with an empty band. My first fill was 3ccs and my second one is on Monday. I will get another 1.5 ccs. My doctor fills every two weeks after you heal but his PA, who does my fills, likes to go slow, which is fine by me. I don't want to be so tight I start PBing. Best wishes and be insistant about getting to your sweet spot!!!

Thats good to know, Okie. Today, I felt very little restriction. I guess its time for me to stop feeling all sad and disappointed that the procedure didnt result in INSTANT gratification. I suppose I should be happy with the fact that it will eventually happen. I am really struggling with my own will power which has kept me from eating how I used to. I cant wait to get a nice good restriction to kick in!

thank for sharing everyone.

I started with a empty band on 10/13 got my first fill 5 weeks later 4cc - 5 weeks after that another.5

went for my third fill 2 weeks ago to fine that i was missing Fluid - a whole 2.5cc -- left the office that day with 4 again and this past thursday went in again for a fluid check and thankfully all 4cc was there and he added another 1cc for a total of 5cc -- i am very tight right now struggling to drink my Protein Shake, just had 4 bits of thin oatmeal and im done -- i feel the restriction as soon as i swallow - honestly it borders on uncomfortable --

waiting it out to see if there is swelling that will go down in a few days or if i have an overfill now..

I have had 3 fills bringing me up to 5.5cc's in my 10cc band. I am restricted now for sure, some days I can eat fine and I think I need a tiny bit more and then some days I am so tight I eat soft foods because I am forsed to, even a little peice of turkey meatloaf will get stuck....so for now no more fills for me ....I need to let a bit more time pass.

sparkles your surgeon actually sounds more on the aggressive side on the fills if he adds 1cc at a time a couple weeks apart. Don't worry you will see it will be fine and if it isn't I'm sure he will make it fine. Not only are individuals different but bands are different. With the lap band you have APS and APL (the bigger one) and w/ Realize they seem to require more cc's for restriction from what I read here.

I was banded in sept. (APS - 10cc band)...my first fill, because I walked in saying i'm STARVING we went to 5.5 cc's well guess what - i didn't even walk out of that office because I couldn't get 1/4 cup of Water down in 45 mins! So I ended up at 4.7 that day. Then we started going up in .5 increments and once again the 3rd time as I was hungry and didn't lose weight (2.5 lbs that month) we went up in a .7 increment to 5.9 cc. Like thinin10 (I think we had the experience around the same time) - I was waking up choking on my saliva. So 2 weeks later, .3 cc's came out and I still lost 10 lbs last month and 12 lbs that month (dec)! This month we only added .1 cc and I think I'm fine (I was actually at my sweet spot at 5.6 cc's for a whole month but started getting hungry - but could also be TOM related). Anyway right now I'm at 5.7 cc's... and I think its fine. Your docs restriction is at a pretty good pace I think.

Anyway this is really a process and a lot of finetuning it seems. My doc wants us in there monthly for the first year and I go whether I think I need an adjustment or not - at least they can keep track of the weight loss. Or do a tiny fill like we did this last time.

I honestly was not ready for a fill last week - I was only oging in to see if my band was leaking and when i was done he said I added another 1cc bringing me from 2cc to 5cc in 2 weeks - that is why i think i am incomfortable and can only get 2 or 3 bits down at a time. I am waiting it out though to see if in a few days swelling goes down and things loosen up,, my dr usually does fills 5-6 weeks apart but i think he was trying to play catch up with since i had lost 2.5 cc at some point - I rememeber right after my fill that brough me to 5.5 i had this same feeling for about a week then things got much better and i had good restriction for about 2 weeks then it went away -

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
