  1. I was told this wouldn't happen by my surgeon's office, but has anyone had to deal with a late period after their surgery? I haven't gotten my period this month yet, my surgery was Dec 28. I don't remember the exact date of my last period, but it was definitely before Christmas, and I'm guessing the middle of the month. Plus, since I'm not on the pill for a while I'm not on an exact schedule right now. I DID take a pregnancy test and it came out negative...But I'm still freaking out a little bit.

    Late Period?

Oh I'd rather have a heavy period right now than the possibility of being pregnant!!
  3. So my surgery was finally approved and now it seems so real! My surgery date is December 28 and I'm nervous and excited at the same time. I'm actually more nervous about the 2-week pre-op diet. Yikes! Who else has a December surgery date?
  4. Has anyone here put through a claim for short-term disability through Metlife? My surgeon gave me approval to be out of work for 6 weeks. Metlife just called to ask some questions and by the questions they were asking, since my job is a desk job and I don't do heavy lifting, they're going to assume I can just work from home or work part-time or something. Well, I want the 6 weeks off! At the moment I cannot sit in a 90-degree angle for very long, and laying down in bed is not conducive to using a lap top. Not to mention the pain, diarrhea, and the drowsiness the pain meds cause. Has anyone else put through a claim?
  5. I'm surprised so many people go home the same day. There is no way I would have been ready to go home. If I weren't on the morphine, I would have been in so much pain.

    Questions...

I was told not to lift more than 10-15 lbs for 6 weeks. But I start grad classes in a couple of weeks so I dunno what's gonna go on with that...

    Gas Pain

It lasted about 2-3 days for me. Take Gas-X and walk around!

    banded, 12/29,questions

HAHA I ook Gas-X the first 2 days I was home (12/29 and 12/30) and I've been fine since. I had gas pain in the beginning but none now! Also, try walking a lot.

    banded, 12/29,questions

I was banded on 12/28 and I'm still a bit swollen, but I've had no problem passing gas! Everyone is different.
  10. Eh, if they don't approve it I'll just take it unpaid. After working full-time and being in graduate school for 2 years, I need the time off.
  11. You won't feel restriction until you start getting fills. A lot of the weight loss in the beginning is from the post-op diets and personal willpower.
  12. I can understand her not wanting anyone to know. I told about 5 people. 3 of those people have been FANTASTIC. Asking questions of concern and interest, and being all-around encouraging. Another friend just doesn't get it. And the last friend called me "lazy". So, not everyone will have the same reaction. A lot of people do not know what it is like to be overweight their whole life, and think just going to the gym will automatically "fix" it. Also, this procedure is probably a lot safer than her being overweight for the rest of her life, or her constant "roller coaster" dieting. The risk of death is super low. One thing you might want to avoid is being the "food police", that is, reminding her of what she can and cannot eat. My mother likes to constantly remind me of the food I won't be able to eat again, and that I'll never be going out to eat at restaurants again, which isn't necessarily true. Most bandsters can eat most food again, just in smaller quantities. The hardest for her will probably be right before and right after surgery, mostly the pre-op and post-op diets. The diets restrict what she can and cannot eat so she can shrink her liver for surgery, then allow her stomach to heal. I think it's great that you are seeking help from other people as to how to help her out. You are a great husband!

My Surgery Dec 28th (Part 1)

I can't believe all the patients show up at the same time. That seems ridiculous.

    Banded 12/22 - I Can't BURP!!

Gas-X has been helping me with the gas pains. At first I couldn't burp but I've had no problem lately!

    10 pounds gain in week

It's the IV from the surgery. I just had my lap band surgery and gained 10 lbs from that. It's definitely the IV.
  16. I was banded Monday, Dec 28. I was supposed to check in at 9:30 for an 11:30 surgery, but there was no traffic so we got there at 830. At 10:10 they called us up so we go to another room to wait. They cal me in, i go in, change into a gurney (sp?), and they ask me a billion questions. The surgeon comes in and talks to me. The anesthesiologist. Some nurses. They give me something to relax me then take me into the back. I don't remember the ride there. I remember being in the OR, I asked where they were putting my port, then all I remember is waking up in the recovery room. They have me there for a while and I sleep off and on. Finally I get to my room and my mom comes to see me. I'm super tired so she leaves and I sleep on and off for a while. I remember being SUPER thirsty, and I'm only allowed to sip water that first day. I stayed the night, so the next day (today) they move me to stage 2 which is drinking more in an hour. Then I advance to stage 3 which is full liquids and I come home! The pain was minimal because I was on morphine the whole time I was there, and eventually I felt real pain, like I did a million sit ups. I have 4 incisions and then one for the port. Not too bad. I'm in some pain but they gave me a liquid pain med which works well. Also there is some gas pain.

    25% removed?

I only know one person who had the band and she had to have it removed within a couple of years. I didn't ask specifics on why, but I do know she was always sick and could never keep food down, and ended up throwing up all the time after eating, so I'm assuming it was erosion or slippage. I did tell her I was getting this done and she said it was great and she would definitely get it done again if she could. Still, that didn't deter me from getting this. Not everyone is the same and anything could go wrong, with any surgery.

    Food restrictions

Elfie I have the same mentality as you! If I wanted to deprive myself of all those delicious things I would just be on a diet and eat only salad forever!

    Food restrictions

if you don't have dairy how do you get your calcium? i feel like a cup of skim milk would be ok.

    pre surgery diet

i'm on the same pre-op diet as you, except i can also have 3 protein shakes/bars a day. I started Dec 14 and I've lost about 9 lbs. i also lost about 6 lbs before then, so a total of about 15 lbs. My surgery is on monday! I totally plan on eating xmas eve dinner tonight, though...

    25% removed?

I think a lot of the statistics are skewed. 25% of people may have had to have their band removed, but was it a slippage caused by constant puking because of overeating? Statistics mean nothing unless they come with information behind them. Just like the statistic that you'll only lose 30%-60% of excess weight - what was the diet like of these people who only lost 30% of their excess weight? Sometimes stats like these are useless.

Life in the real world !!

I think the best post I've seen on here was the girl who asked her co-workers not to bring food into the office because she has no self-control. hhahahah

    Protein post surgery??

If you're talking about the Isopure protein powder - DON'T get it. It tastes AWFUL, the chocolate AND vanilla. I just returned 2 packages to GNC today and the guys there weren't surprised I said it tasted nasty. I heard the fruit drinks are really good, though. The Unjury is pretty good. And if you're looking for the chocolate ones, muscle milk light is good. Kinda expensive, but I would rather have something that tastes good than save a few bucks.

    Eat what you want!

I agree with this. I also want to point out that total deprivation can cause bingeing. Yes, you may only be able to eat a small amount, but what's keeping you from filling up on cake one day? Or just eating a carton of ice cream since that will go right down? It's ok to have a treat once in a while - just not to go overboard. The reason I chose the band instead of bypass is that I would be able to have sugar - there is NO way I could go without ever eating chocolate again. So, being obsessed with what you can't eat probably isn't good for you in the long run. Having a treat once in a while isn't going to cause you to gain 50 lbs...
