(please check that I have the right surgery date - 20th? - it is hard because of the day and time difference between Australia [where I am] and the US)

You did right but just forgot to remove the QUOTE bits [in square brackets] at the start and at the end. If you'd like to join the challenge, quote this post, remove the QUOTE marks at the start and the end of the quote, then add your name and your goal weight loss for July 4th to the bottom of the list (you can copy and paste a previous name then delete that name and add your own). There are 9 weeks between 1 May and 4th July, so try to choose a goal that is reasonable in this time frame. When 1 May comes around, add your weight in the appropriate column and then your target weight. Then, regularly update your current weight throughout the challenge. Most people posting appear to have had a pretty good recovery after surgery but, as for you, it was not such a fun ride for my partner, who was banded on the 9th April. She did ok for the first day or two (and only nights were difficult) but then she started experiencing extreme bloating and had not been able to keep anything (not even water) down for two days from the nausea and heaving. She had been trying everything (simethicone preparation, walking, massage, yoga positions, etc, etc) to help but nothing made much difference. She really had gotten into a very bad cycle where the gas leads to nausea, the nausea leads to retching, the retching means she can't keep fluids down, she hyperventilates to try to avoid retching but this means she swallows more air, she gets dehydrated and tired, which means she is not walking so much, so the gas is not escaping, so she ends up with more gas pain ... We saw her surgeon on Friday who checked everything out and reassured her that everything is ok with the band and that the gas problem would eventually pass (when pressed for how long - he replied it varied across people). Lisa is apparently an "air-swallower" (evidenced by the fact that she did a lot of burping before the procedure). It is harder to burp once the band is in and it is this that is causing her extreme discomfort. He also gave her a Maxolon shot. Our surgeon has a recovery room at his rooms so we sat in there until the shot took effect and she was able to swallow sips of Water. In the afternoon, as well as keeping water and fluids (electrolyte fluids) down again, she took some Phenergan and more Maxolon (in tablet form) plus some charcoal tablets. On Friday arvo she was finally sleeping while I had everything crossed (even my eyes!) that she'd be feeling better after a sleep. That night Lisa had her first night without heaving and it was heaven (for both of us!). On Saturday she was back to nutritious fluids (soups, Protein drinks, etc) and back to walking, so by last night she was feeling her old self. So all is good here again. The moral of the story - if you are heaving, get a Maxolon shot (or something similar) quickly - don't let yourself get into the vicious cycle my partner found herself in.

Great to hear from you Tamara. That extra kilo is God's way of getting you back for a nasty April fool's joke! I'm sure She'll take it away again soon. Seriously, there are so many things that can cause a 1kg fluctuation in weight -as the good new yorkers say "forget about it". I think your doctor sounds great. This is the time to make sure you are properly healed and adequate nutrition is essential for that. I'm really pleased to hear you say that you fill up quickly (and that's with no fill!). That is soooo what I want from this band. You won't be able to help but loose weight if you're eating smaller portions. Your hubby sounds like an absolute sweetheart - the Wii and Wii Fit is so much a better surprise than a bunch of flowers. We have the Wii and Wii Fit too - You've inspired me to get it out and wipe off the 2kg of dust that must be built up on it and get back to playing. We also have Wii sports (with the bowling, the tennis, the boxing, etc), which is fun, and also the dance mat (Dancing Stage Hottest Party) which I totally ADORE (but Lisa hates ) - it is a super fun workout. And already shopping for smaller sized clothes - HOLY CRAP! That is quick. Congratulations on getting to "small". Yes, my turn this Thursday. I'm a bit worried because I know I have an enlarged liver (from a CAT scan I had done) and I did not stick to the pre-op diet too well while Lisa had been ill (but I am back on the program now - have not cheated at all today). I e-mailed the surgeon and warned him. Hopefully, he won't be too upset. I'll keep you posted. Lisa is doing really well now so, as long as she stays this way, she'll be able to drive me home and look after me (otherwise I'll have to cab it home - or maybe even walk! - the hospital is only about 2km (1mile) from home) Lili

Great post lingling! Lap-banding is not an extreme sport - no need for a "hell for leather" mindset. A slow and steady weight loss that lasts is the objective.

Hi guys, Sorry to hear about the throwing up. My partner was banded on the 9th and was throwing up every night. Things got really bad and she got to the point where she was not going more than an hour or two with retching. She got very weak from not being able to absorb much in the way of fluids or medications. On Friday we saw her surgeon who checked her out and reassured her that she had not damaged anything. He also gave her a Maxolon shot. She has made a fantastic recovery since then. Please don't wait too long to get things checked out with your surgeon.

Even though I'm an aussie, thought it would be fun to have a July 4th challenge for all the bunny bandsters. The start date for the challenge will be 1 May 2009 and the challenge will end on 4 July 2009. Everyone is welcome to participate. I've started a list for those interested in participating. If you'd like to join the challenge, just quote this post, cut the list, paste the list to your own post, then add your name and your goal weight loss for July 4th to the bottom of the list. There are 9 weeks between 1 May and 4th July, so try to choose a goal that is reasonable in this time frame. When 1 May comes around, add your weight in the appropriate column and then your target weight. Then, regularly update your current weight throughout the challenge. If someone would like to suggest a "stars & stripes" themed ticker we could all add to our signatures, that would be very cool.
