Desafio reacted to MaybeMeow2 in I am a food addict. And Bypass isn't a cure.Hi Gang. Meow here. 5.5 months post op bypass. I've had slow but steady losses. (SW:217 CW:178. GW: 150)
And I just felt the need to make a post about my sweet addiction. Before my surgery I found myself very concerned about dumping. Often asking in the forum whether Bypass meant I could never have treats again and being assured I could "eventually" or "a bite or two" or "in moderation" etc. This brought me great relief. I knew then I wasn't in the ideal frame of mind but I was doing the best I could.
I found at about 4 weeks post op I could tolerate about 5 of my favorite chocolate covered almonds and ate them every night as a reward for hitting my protein and water goals. Eventually I increased that to 10 choco almonds. Then it moved to other desserts or candy. What I've found is my entire eating plan is focused on getting my "healthys" in so I can have a treat at the end of the day. I become obsessed. I realize I've always been that way. Eat healthy so you can indulge.
I find I get nauseous if I eat a full portion of dessert. But I can usually get away with eating half. So I do. Every day. Or I eat the full portion and get nauseous. I get thru it. Usually lasts about 30 minutes. I feel miserable. I don't throw up. When I'm in the middle of the nausea I swear I'll never have sugar again. But then it passes and I'm the addict again.
The last couple months I've somehow justified 2 treats a day. And this Thanksgiving was the first time I really realized how deeply I don't have control over my treat addiction. I was surrounded by baked goods. I'd eat a small one. Feel sick. Then a couple hours do it again. Over the 2 days of celebration I made myself feel sick about 5 times. The nausea is miserable. Sweats, light headed, toe-curling nausea. Then it passes. And I'm fine. And like a drug addict I indulge again. It's shocking. It's like I'm binging. Except I never throw up and it's only one treat at a time.
I guess my point is... bypass didn't cure me. I do feel sick when I eat too much sugar. But it doesn't stop me from doing it. From constantly seeing how much I can have before I feel sick. I have a lot of work to do before I am no longer "unhealthy" regardless of my weight. Wanted to share in case others are sweet addicts and wondering how the surgery will affect that.

Surgery set for June 17th and I am terrified of failing at the lifestyle change after. So much so that I am thinking about postponing and trying to live the lifestyle for 4 months to see if I REALLY need the surgery BUT I am also terrified of putting it off and having a heart attack or stroke or something.
I’m in Las Vegas NV and surgery is with Dr Xu.
oh to make things worse… I tested positive for COVID over the weekend.

Desafio reacted to Mariann812 in June 2022 surgery buddiesI’m going to try to tackle a couple different issues here.
Two weeks ago I was nervous, anxious, scared, and snapping at everyone because surgery was 3 weeks away and I was seriously questioning the sanity of doing this.
I cried, I yelled, I ate…then I calmed the heck down. ??♀️
The most difficult, nearly impossible food item I have had to turn from is Coca Cola.
I did a very relaxed eating plan…couple of Protein Shakes, a salad starting 3 weeks before surgery. I knew that one week prior to surgery, I absolutely would follow my doctor’s pre - surgery plan to a T. I cheated once in awhile, but with surgery scheduled for June 8, I knew that on 5/31, I would be compliant.
And, I was. I stayed on plan yesterday., I’ve been completely compliant today. ?
I found, thanks to a recommendation here, that I love the Premier Peanut Butter chocolate shake. I have had a difficult time finding a shake I like because the pre-surgery selection for my surgeon was Premier or Bariatric Pal. Today I tried PB and chocolate and I’m good!
FWIW, I’m doing every.little.thing I can to be nice to me in every category except putting food in my mouth. I went away with my daughter for the holiday weekend and relaxed and was nice to me. I took an entire day off from school today for my pre-anesthesia visit at the hospital, took a long nap this afternoon.
Yesterday I was on a tele-visit for post-surgery care with an extremely well-informed nurse who also has undergone bariatric surgery. She was a wealth of information.
This morning’s hospital visit really helped calm my nerves. We have amazing health care in Wake County, NC, and I am repeatedly impressed with the care that I have received. I feel much less stressed, and again very comfortable with my decision to pursue bariatric surgery because of those 2 surgeon-required pre-procedure appointments.
I’ll continue to update as this moves forward.
Thanks for reading. ?

Desafio reacted to Arabesque in Any pre op Hair and Skin Prep tipsAs the others have said: it’s just a part of the experience. Your natural hair loss cycle accelerates as a result of the shock of the surgery, stress, anaesthetic, decreased protein intake, dietary changes, etc. The hair you lose was destined to be shed it just happens a bit faster than usual. Just keep on top of your daily protein goal & take your multivitamins. Taking additional supplements that supposedly stop hair loss or strengthen your hair will only help new growth not the hair on your head which is already dead if it does anything. Nothing happens to your new growth cycle so you still ate growing new hair while your losing just at it’s usual rate. A lot of us cut our hair shorter so the new growth doesn’t have as much to grow to catch up plus short hair always seems to look thicker.
Same with your skin. Protein is important. You can try taking collagen & silica. Keep it well moisturised & regularly exfoliate. You may look more gaunt & tired for a while but it does settle once you start maintaining. Genetics, age, highest weight, length of time being obese all influences how much your skin has been stretched, how much will bounce back & how much loose skin you end up with.
All the best.

Desafio reacted to Mrskellygreen in June 2022 surgery buddies1 week until my liquid diet starts ?
I am so excited! Even for that!
Anyway what brands are you guys using as far as protein shake? Other stuff?
I bought the Equate High Performance protein ready to drink shakes in chocolate, vanilla, latte, and caramel.
I also bought the Two Good yogurt in assorted flavors. Sugar free pudding cups, and all the varieties of sugar free jello cups.
On my list of need to buys is; broth and flavor packets for water.
On a side note, I found about 4 kinds of Jordan's Skinny Syrups at Bealls Outlet store for $3.99 a bottle, just in case yall have that store in your area and are interested. I hear the syrups are good for flavoring shakes and etc.

Desafio reacted to jumers520 in June surgeries? Tell me your preparationsHello. I’m new to this app. My surgery is coming up on June 13th and I’m absolutely nervous and excited at the same time. I been doing the prep op that my doctor wants me on. Replace two of my meals with a protein shake. 2 snacks and the 1 meal. It’s been a journey and hard to be on this prep op diet plan but I’m doing it and counting down my days for surgery. -
Desafio reacted to Mariann812 in June surgeries? Tell me your preparationsI’m doing everything my surgeon’s practice told me to, AND I’m being nice to me. ?
I have a post about ‘that’ in the June surgery topic.
Yesterday I was online shopping and I bought a gorgeous $$$sweater for me that hopefully will fit by the holidays. It was marked down from its prohibitive cost so I grabbed it in the only size they had. It’s a size 10 and I think that in 6 months, if not sooner, I’ll be able to wear it. And gorgeous black velvet ballet slippers.
I bought skin care products (which are my weakness).
At home and at school, if anyone around me starts to sound contentious with another person, I leave immediately. I don’t want to be around the stress or tension.
My husband is ALWAYS talking about food and what he has prepared for dinner. He may not do that around me. He knows that he does this and he understands why he can’t do it now.
I am truly being somewhat introspective, selfish and self-protective. My husband is always that way to me…very protective. I am never that way to myself, but I am being that way now. With the two of us being that way about me, I’m doing my best to be calm, positive, and focused.
Trust me, if I lose my ?, it’s not going to be pretty. ??????
Good luck with your surgery.?

Desafio got a reaction from missgiggles127 in June surgeries? Tell me your preparationsHi!
I am schedule for surgery on 6/6. I am on day 4th of liquid diet. I did a trial last week to see how hard it was going to be. Last week was a mess, hunger pains, mood swing and being very tired. This week has been tolerable, still have hunger pains, but I have schedule going. ?

Desafio reacted to kcuster83 in Sleeping Upright Post OpApparently GERD and acid issues are very common with the sleeve surgery.
I already have SEVERE GERD so my surgery urged against the sleeve for me and explained why bypass was my better option. I had Bypass 4 weeks ago and have had ZERO acid/GERD issues since.
I did have to sleep in a recliner for about a week and a half just because it was more comfortable with the incisions healing. Laying flat like it was pulling at everything too much and was too sore.

Desafio reacted to Mariann812 in June 2022 surgery buddiesJust finished pre-anesthesia testing. Blood was drawn, extensive confirmation of meds, instructions, etc.
it all tended to put me at ease and begin to be excited about all of this again.
Kudos to Wake Med in Cary, NC. I have been incredibly favorably impressed with every aspect of their approach and handling of my procedure. -
