  1. As part of a healthy diet, I believe PB can be totally acceptable. I've been trying it as bike food on long rides (30+ miles) and it really provides lasting satiety, good energy, plenty of Protein and good fats. Used sparingly, it works into my 1200 calorie day. Besides, a house is not a home without peanut butter! :thumbup:

Hi all - I ride, a lot, and had been relying on Shot Blox to keep me going on rides longer than 50 miles, but after hitting 300 miles on the bike last week, I came to on Monday morning to find I'd gained about 5 lbs. As of Wednesday I've only lost about 1.5, so I'm thinking that's real weight, not just Water, and the only thing I can attribute it to is the number of Shot Blox I consumed. I did 50 miles on Monday, 35 on Tuesday, 55 on Wednesday, 45 on Thursday, 30 on Friday, 50 on Saturday and 38 on Sunday. That's two or three packages a ride, or more, plus miscellaneous bananas, cliff bars, and regular meals. Bottom line, I'm trying to figure out what to eat on long rides. I've got a metric century coming up this week, and two centuries next month. I need to get my nutrition to a point where I can fuel the ride (and Protein just doesn't cut it), but keep losing weight. I've asked the fill nurse and doc, but no help (neither of them are athletes). Thoughts, suggestions? Thanks! Lisa B

  4. Like Lulu, I had planned to eat more than the band decided I could eat - the turkey came out a bit too dry and I think I managed about 2 ounces. The blueberry pie made it down, tho. But I'm again in that very annoying up-down-up-down of a pound phase right now. Guess I should be used to it by now, sigh.

    November Exercise Challenge

    Work is still kicking my ass - and I can't access LBT during the day, wah! - but I'm sticking to the regular workout schedule. Today a.m.: 30 mins. of core and upper body strength training afternoon: 40 min. brisk walk p.m.: 90 min. brisk walk, for a total of 16,000 steps. But I can't stop eating - it's like I see it, I eat it. Someone brought in homemade pumpkin scones today and I ate one. Someone else stocked her candy dish with chocolate coins (those foil-wrapped ones, silver dollar size), and I ate five. I'm writing everything down but I feel like I could eat from a Breakfast through 'til bedtime. I have a fill scheduled for Friday but it's with my doctor's PA, who was stingy with my last fill. I'm down 50 lbs., but at this rate things are going to come to a screeching halt. Grr arg. OK, back to your regularly scheduled exercise listings ...
  8. I'm asking here first because I'm still trying to figure this one out - not sure whether to ask my lapband doc or my regular GP. Often, when I walk in the morning or afternoon, I will get an excrutiating pain in my lower abdomen, just at the waistline on the right side. It only seems to be triggered by walking - I do crunches, weight work, doesn't seem to bother it. It's like something is trying to claw its way into my belly. Since it happens when I'm moving I'm leaning toward the fact that it's a muscle-related pain, and I know the hip bone is connected to ... something :eek:, but what the heck?? Anyone had the same thing happen? It is only since the surgery, which makes me think it's lapband related, but who knows. TIA, Lisa

    November Exercise Challenge

    Dog walk: 20 mins. Weights/abs: 30 mins. (which is why the dog got shortchanged :eek:) lunch walk: 45 mins. Still to come: p.m. dog walk (55 mins.) Still trying to figure out where the showers/locker rooms are in my new office building so I can start bike commuting again. The car commute is really easy, but I'd much rather do the 10-mile round trip via bike.

    November Exercise Challenge

    Friday 6.5 miles walking ab work weight training Saturday NOTHING - came home from jewelry class and went to bed. This is one of those colds where I feel almost fine, until I try to do something. Blech. Sunday (today) 1.5 miles - I think, after retrieving my pedometer from the pocket of my just-washed jeans. Sigh. Cold on the brain as well as in the nose ... I'll try some ab and weight training later, if my body agrees.

    November Exercise Challenge

    This new job is kicking my ass. As is some kind of cold/virus, our drenching, multi-day rains, and my walking partner the dog unable to walk thanks to a swollen foot. So today all I did was a 20 minute walk, followed by weight and core work this morning. It's 6:30 p.m., dark, pouring, cold, and I'm only at 4800 steps for the day, but I don't know if I can drag myself out. Motivation, please find me! :thumbup:

    November Exercise Challenge

    Yesterday: two hours of technical mountain biking, plus one 25-minute walk. Today: 55-minute walk (2.5 miles), and the first day of a new job, back to work after 2 months of unemployment. I wanted to do some weight work tonight but just couldn't do it - at this point I'm happy that I managed not to sedate myself with alcohol or comfort myself with food - it was a *hard* day!

    Anyone with Microsoft?

    I had done the 20/20 program at the Pro Club about 2 years ago, so that counted as my previous supervised weight loss attempt. Once I met with the surgeon and got that process started, I had to meet with a nutritionist and psychologist, then submit everything to Premera. Took Premera about 2-3 weeks to approve everything, with some pestering by me. Everyone is different, but this should help as a ballpark. HTH

  22. You could also try a couple of at-home fitness DVDs that are very quick. Two I like are "[ame=http://www.amazon.com/Jillian-Michaels-30-Day-Shred/dp/B00127RAJY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1225378829&sr=8-1]30 Day Shred[/ame]," which takes 20-25 minutes and is a killer workout (seriously, you'll have a hard time walking for a few days - it's great!) encompassing cardio, core and strength training. The second is the "10 Minute Solution" series. The one I like is the one with a [ame=http://www.amazon.com/10-Minute-Solution-Fitness-Workouts/dp/B000GEIRB4/ref=sr_1_17?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1225378906&sr=1-17]fitness ball[/ame], but there are dozens. On each there are usually five different workouts you can choose from, each lasting 10 minutes - core, upper body, lower body, cardio, flexibility. I usually do just the core and upper body, but since they're really just toning and sculpting you can do all of them in a row if you have the time. I also have the [ame=http://www.amazon.com/10-Minute-Solution-Kickbox-Bootcamp/dp/B000A3DGG2/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1225378906&sr=1-13]Kickbox Bootcamp [/ame]which is fun for a change up. Again, each section lasts only 10 minutes. Surely you have 10 minutes in the morning or at night?

I too write everything down - food, Water, exercise (I wear a heart rate monitor when I work out so I can get a general idea of calories burned) - and the more I pay attention to staying within what works for me (approx. 1000 C/day), the better I do. Some people use Daily Plate, but I just handwrite everything and look it up with CalorieKing. There was a study a while ago on weight loss that found that people who wrote down what the ate, when/calories, did better at taking off weight and maintaining if they continued to journal it. I know if works for me. YMMV.

    looking for people who cycle

    Hmmm - all this love, and no bike talk. :wink_smile: I'm Lisa. I've been a year-round bike-to-work commuter - 3-5 days a week - for the last 12 years, anywhere from 30 to 16 miles round-trip - all road biking. I bought a beautiful new custom road bike last September that I love, but I haven't been riding a lot lately - I injured my hip in February, had surgery, had to be off the bike for about three months and it's been really slow getting back up to speed. Every time I ride for 3-4 weeks it seems like something else conspires to keep me off the bike for a month. So my beautiful bike is getting dusty! My husband and I also ride a tandem - last year we went to Vermont and did a self-supported tour of the state, 400 miles in 10 days. Great fun! I'm actually taking a mountain biking class this Saturday that should be ... interesting. :biggrin: I've mountain biked about 4 times in the last 6 months and it's fun, but my husband (who has been mtn. biking for at least 25 years) says he's not much of a teacher so I need to learn some mad skillz before I feel comfortable out there on my own. Between the two of us we own eight bikes - I have two, we share the tandem, and he has FIVE. What is he doing right now? Tinkering with a bike. He's a bike geek, what can I say?! I'm just happy to have an in-house mechanic. What about you guys? What's in your stable?
