  1. :confused:I will soon be having my lap band done. I am a diabetic 2. However, I am an insuin pump user with humalog. Will I use it during surgery? If not, then do I reconnect after and do a glucose check and manual bolus to correct my level? Or do I just leave it all off and try to catch up to where my glucose level should be, later that evening? My reg. physician isn't very knowledgeable with pumps. Not too sure about the doc doing the banding. Have to still meet with him on the 11th of July. Any answers appreciated. JuneR
  2. I had my banding done last July 15th. Two days later, I accidentally knocked off my port to my insulin pump. I, then, was only using the insulin plus other meds for hypertension. Well, I decided to see what my levels would be without using the pump and insulin. My levels stayed normal. I checked frequently and they stayed normal! I eat very little carbohydates now, so my levels stay normal. Infact, my last test was 5.8. I also was able to reduce my hypertension meds. So, I am down to one for hypertension and one for cholestrol. I was on 7 meds beside insulin. I have lost 74 pounds. Am totally happy with my decision of banding.

    Diabetic/Insulin Concerns

Hi, I was on an insulin pump prior to being banded. The 2nd day after banded, I accidentally knocked off my insulin port. So, since it was off, I decided to watch my glucose levels carefully. Because my eating habits changed so much, apparently I didn't need the insulin. My levels remained steady and in the normal range. After eating, 1 hour later, levels were at 135. 2 hours later back to 119, three hours later 104-112. My levels at fasting in am are 112 and below. I was, also, able to get off of 4 other meds for high blood pressure and acid reflux. But, keep in mind that I eat very little carbs - no more than 7 grms per meal. But I feel great! My doctor is amazed. So far, I have lost 29 pounds in 1 1/2 months. Don't go the gastric bypass. The lapband is so much easier to live with and do. I went to Northwest Weight Loss Clinic in Everett, WA. I had my surgery at 7 am and was out by 11 am. My bmi was 47. Pain was very very minimal. I was out and walking the next day. They had me on liquids for 1 week then soft foods the next. Good luck, it is one of the best decisions I have ever made! June
  4. I am about to get banded on the 15th. I 'm told not to eat any bread esp. white as it will gum up the band. I don't want to have problems, so what do you do about the sacrament bread? I know it is just a tiny bit. But would and could that cause any problems? I don't want to slime or have problems in church. Thanks for any info. Am being banded at Northwest Weight Loss Center in Washington state. I spend 6 months here in Marysville, WA then 6 months in Laredo, MO. Will do this until I can reverse the weight and diabetic issue. Have to use the ins. I have in WA until I do reverse the situation. Other ins. won't even talk to me at this point for life in Missouri. Thanks for the info. JuneR
  5. Was banded on the 15th. Doing very good. Per instructions, am on soft foods this week. Saw the doctor today and she was pleased with my progress. Have lost 8 pounds, off of insulin, off of two high blood pressure meds, and off of med for cid reflux. Told her what and how much I was eating (1/2 c. soft foods per meal). She asked how I was doing with that and Hhow I felt, which I was fine with it and not feeling too hungry. She gave me some more material from the lapband comp. It said that one should be eating 2 oz. per meal or you could stretch out the pouch. Am I stretching out my pouch? I am not feeling bad after eating. How much are you all eating post surgery when on soft foods? JuneR,
  6. Far as I can tell by other postings, we are ok but don't exceed. We can have 1/4 c to 1/2 c a meal. My doctor didn't say anything against the 1/2 c. So I assume it is ok. I was also told not to eat pastas, rice, breads. But I see that some of the postings are. I am ok going without, especially if it gets me to my goal. Thanks for the comeback and good luck to you. JuneR
  7. I was just banded on 7/15/08. Great experience. Was done at NWWLC in Washington. Am doing a lot of burping. Soreness is minimal. Doctor wanted me to lose 10 pounds prior but only lost 7 lbs. Am on a liquid diet for 1 week then soft foods. I walk about 40 min. a day. Have now lost 12 lbs total. Greatest news is that I accidentally knocked off my port to my insulin pump. Decided to see what happens to BG levels when not using it. Guess what! I don't think that I need to be on insulin anymore. My levels are staying where they should be. Hope it all stays that way. When I start on more solid foods, I don't expect it to change as long as I eat the way I am suppose to- protein/veg/fruits/carbs. I figure there won't be much carbs when I need to eat protein first. I am using "medifast" shakes until soft foods. The clinic gave me a duffle bag to put my clothes in during surgery. They have you keep that and the booties. That has got to be the most expensive duffle bag I have ever bought! I better enjoy it. Love this forum. JuneR:tt1:
  8. thanks for the reply. My doc is heavily relying on medtronic personnel. So I will also check with them. I just wasn't sure about the pump during surgery. Where did you place it during surgery? thanks again for the info. June R
  9. Hi I am will be getting banded soon, I hope. One question I have is about life changes. So are popcorn, celery, all soft breads, completely off the eating list forever? I can understand the soda but the rest of the list? Thanks for the info. JuneR:confused::ohmy:
  10. I need some help in deciding when and where. I am BMI of 43, diabetic 2 with insulin pump, hypertensive since I was 18 now am 57. I live 6 months in Wa. due to insurance needs and then 6 months in MO as we bought a house there (thinking of changing insurance but can't due to BMI, insulin use and hypertensive- no insurance will take me) so have to keep residence in WA as primary. My ins will not cover the surgery. So have to self pay. I have until Oct. 7th here in WA before going back to Mo. The lap clinic here will do 13 months follow ups. So I will miss some time either way, if I do it now or wait until next April. Or should I do it at Kansas City? Then have to leave there and have followups in WA. How many fills should I figure on and how often? Can I have the surgery here, maybe two fills then wait until I get back here in April for further fills? I am anxious to get started. Do I need to see my endochrinologist first? Any ideas and help greatly appreciated. June:confused:
