bizzylizzy reacted to escape_pinacolada in 5 years post op and have huge REGRET!Hello,
I am new to this forum but I really need to warn others. I am 5 years post op from the sleeve surgery and am MISERABLE! I have also had 4 more surgeries to fix a hiatal hernia at the esophagus and stomach as well as pouches that were formed by the surgery. I have not been able to eat normally since the surgery and by normally I mean the way you are suppose to after VSG. I haven't been able to drink water without pain. My SW was 245 and now I am at 184 and losing since my most recent surgery. The recent surgery was to fix the hiatal hernia again. I was told it was a "new" way of fixing the hernia, nothing more was told to me. My pancreas was also removed at the same time. My surgery was called a Nissen Fundoplication, its pretty complicated. They use of the stomach to be wrapped around the esophagus so it won't go up into that area again. From the beginning I have had GERD very bad, it was so bad I was on 2 different medications as well as over the counter antacids so that is why the Nissen Fundoplication. It has been horrible this 5 year journey. I am getting all of my records together for a second opinion and to possibly have a revision to the RNY.
This surgery was the biggest regret of my life. My life has suffered more and my relationship has also been hurt by this. I am always so tired and sick, and my husband is worried about losing me.
I have also been just left to flounder. I have had numerous swallow tests and load of medications but NOTHING allows me to drink a nice glass of water, albeit a sip at a time, without pain.
So in one word "YES" i regret everything about this surgery.

I had GERD prior to surgery, which is why I went with bypass. It completely went away for 2-3 years. It did eventually start up again, but it's a much milder case than it was pre-surgery. Basically, bypass often (but not always) greatly improves if not outright cures GERD. Note the word "often". It doesn't always, but usually, yes, it does (and I do know many people for whom it went away permanently).
not all RNY'ers dump. The statistic that seems to be thrown around a lot is that 30% of us do, but I have no idea if there's any hardcore medical research behind that number. But just based on what I've picked up just hanging around bariatric forums for the last six years, that sounds about right. I've never dumped and I know a lot of other RNY'ers who don't. If you're one of the ones who do, you can control that through diet by limiting or avoiding sugar and fatty things (which we all should be doing ANYWAY).
re: loose skin. I have worked with pre-op groups in my bariatric clinic for the last three years. Loose skin (and hair loss) has got to be the number 1 worry of most of them. I, too, worried about those things incessantly when I was a pre-op and early post-op. I would be willing to bet the farm that the vast majority of us who are out a ways wonder why we wasted even one brain cell worrying about this. I would take loose skin any day over weighing almost 400 lbs again. ANY DAY!
I have since had mine removed because I got tired of looking at it, and I got tired of hearing it slap up against my body when I exercised, but it was very easy to hide in clothes and I'm pretty sure no one knew it was there besides my husband. Here is a picture of me before I had skin surgery. Notice the loose skin? And I had a lot of it since I lost over 200 lbs.

bizzylizzy reacted to Kimmisi in June 2020 surgeriesHi All. I just found this site and am looking forward to reading everything! I'm hoping to be scheduled for late June. I'm working quickly through my requirements. I've started changing my eating habits to prepare for post bariatric life.

bizzylizzy reacted to EddieS in June 2020 surgeriesI'm scheduled for June 16th. It's still possible that it'll be postponed at the last minute though, since CA is still doing scheduled surgeries very sparingly due to COVID. Things are trending in the right direction though, so I'm hoping by mid June hospitals will be more or less back in the swing of things and I'll be able to keep the date. Fingers crossed! -

bizzylizzy reacted to glannin in April 2020Hello,
I am so glad to hear April is you month. May date is the 7th of April 4 days after my 56th birthday. Happy Birthday to me...This is my gift to myself. I can not wait. I am in Michigan started the journey in May of 2019. Due to my insurance I had to go 6 months in a row with missing any appointments. on my last appointment I gained some weight so they gave me another month, to make sure I was living the bariatric life style...so I did good in November lost 11 lbs. my next goal was to stop smoking which I did (happy dance) and now I have to be 3 months smoke free, hence my date in April. I am very excited to do this I am dragging along so uncomfortably right now... let's do this!!!!!
