    Blah...my first stall...

Ah yes, the infamous 3 week stall. I started just thinking of my body 're calibrating' and moving a smidge of fat from here to here, and moving more energy over there. I found that helped a lot with the mental energy worrying about the stall, thinking I had done something wrong, being catastrophic about it etc lol. I am a just over a year out...and I spend most of the month stalled lol then I lose. So I just think of my body needing a minute to figure out what to do next and get organized and it halts ALL PRODUCTION until it sorts itself out again and starts losing. Hope that helps!

    TMI question 🙋‍♀️

A week. I eventually had to take something to get it moving along. After that, I guess I am one of the 'lucky' ones! I go everyday/every second day and I don't take anything for it.

    Can't Decide!

Hi! I had my heart set on the sleeve as well. However, my gerd started getting worse and worse, and I thought...I can't logically get the sleeve and have my Gerd worse. I was afraid that getting my intestines all re-routed....and I was super afraid of the malabsorption. I'm really happy with my Bypass. I have had no complications, and I am still losing...and I am a bit over a year. I did some research on the malabsorption aspect of the bypass, and it sounds like it's not really a malabsorption in the truest medical sense. There are tons of great scholarly articles on the internet that can help with some of the myths of WLS. Have you met with a surgeon yet? They would also be able to help with some of your questions and fears on the medical side of it. Is there something is particular that makes you feel uneasy with Bypass?

    Gas pain....omg....

It's so funny....I didn't get the pain everyone talks about....around the neck/shoulders/side. I had gas just inside....the pain was right above my bellybutton. Walking didn't do anything....it wasn't until I was at home and could just pass gas that I felt way better! That was day 2-3 for me. Hope you feel better soon!
  7. Today is the day!!! Good Luck!!! We will see you on the other side

How long are you missing work?

I had 6 months of sick time accrued, so I took 6 weeks. I really wanted to spend that time working on changing habits, forming new ones and walking. I really wanted to make sure I was cementing my 'new life' before I introduced another element into the change. I didn't have any post op complications or issues. I know not everyone has the ability to take so much time off, but I found it really helpful for my emotional well being as well. I didn't know if I'd be super hormonal, in pain, or whatever and I thought healing mentally and physically and only focusing on ME would be beneficial, and it was.

    How much calcium??

Hello! My requirement is 1200; however, I have to factor in any calcium I get as well. So I always have a Decaf Earl Grey Latte in the morning (1 cup of Milk), I have 2/3 cup of fairlife milk at breakfast making my oatmeal, plus I have yogurt and cheese at lunch. So I only ever take 1 300mg Tablet because I get so much during the day. Just make sure you take it 2 hour before or after your multivitamin....Calcium and Iron don't get along Hope that helps!

    Eating

Totally agree! I just past 1 year...but I was home after surgery for 6 weeks. In that time, I just kept to a schedule. I still eat and drink at the same times as I did last year! I also found I would keep sugar free gatorade in the car and such just in case I got caught up somewhere unexpectedly. I say gatorade not water because my water bottle was too big for my cup holder 😂

    Hair questions

I think we should be clearer on these boards about hair loss. Almost every post about hair loss has said to make sure you get your protein and vitamins (yes, we all should be getting our protein and vitamins), but this isn't the sole cause of the hair loss. It can certainly be exacerbated by not getting in your protein or vitamins. From the start, I have been able to get all my protein in, water, and swallow pills. I have lost about 40-50% of my hair. Thank goodness I have a lot of hair, but it is still noticeable to me. I am really annoyed by it because it's growing back....but it's coming in all weird, and it's full of static right now too. It's probably going to take about another year for my hair to return to normal. My point is, the stress of a 'traumatic' surgery on the body, coupled with massive hormone changes with this type of surgery is a big contributing factor to the hair loss. I spent a lot of months thinking it was my protein intake and that hasn't been the cause. I just want others to realize that it doesn't solely come down to protein.

    Pooping

8 days after the surgery. I suppose I am fortunate, but I go everyday....so I have no constipation issues

    No Caffeine

My program allows caffeine. However, on my 5 week preop diet I wasn't allowed anything except the shakes. My first morning in the hospital, they gave me caffeinated lemon tea lol. I have a coffee about once a month now...but I switched to earl grey lattes in the mornings. I use decaffeinated early grey tea, sugar free vanilla syrup and steamed milk (protein!). I am coming up on my 1 year next month, and I haven't gone back to coffee 'full time' yet. Not sure if I will either! I still crave Diet Coke like crazy....but I haven't had it yet either. Just my tea and water (with flavouring) for now. Hope that helps!

When did you start eating fruits? (Carbs content)

I usually use brown...but every now and again it's white, depends on the dish You could also slap some re fried beans and avocado on a pita...that would be delish!

When did you start eating fruits? (Carbs content)

Thanks so much!! I gave up coffee, and I didn't even really intend to. I start my day now with an earl grey latte, so the 1 cup of milk in that is an auto 110 calories...so that probably helps getting to 1200 lol. Here is a sample day from 2 months after surgery. It was about 1125 calories: 1) Decaf Earl Grey Latte with 1% milk, sugar free syrup = 110 calories 2) Peanut butter Oatmeal: 1/3 cup quick oats, 2/3 cup Fairlife Milk, 15g of Powdered Peanut butter, 1/2 scoop unflvaoured protein powder, 4g brown sugar = 312 Calories 3) Whole Grain Pita, 2 tbsp Hummus, 2.5 oz Chicken = 291 Calories 4) 1/2 cup Rice, Slow Cooker Jambalaya = 308 calories 5) Apple = 95 Calories This day was 80g protein, 150 carbs, 23g fat One thing that bothered me for quite awhile was bread. It would go down fine and such but it sat weird in my stomach and I always felt burpy/gassy after. I didn't have the problem with the pita, likely because it's not nearly as dense/fluffy etc as bread. I have a sensitivity to oils/fats even before surgery. I have had 2 things since surgery that I will never have again, because the bathroom issues after was AWFUL lol. I had a beyond sausage that shot through me...and at Christmas I had a meatball...not all beef....but thought it might be okay. It was not lol. To be fair though, those would have probably ruined me before surgery too. I hope that helps!

When did you start eating fruits? (Carbs content)

Hello! My program has been getting patients up to/over 1200 cals asap. I have been on solid foods since week 4. My program focuses more on texture, and what to have more often vs less often (ie Protein vs say candy). I have grapes usually everyday, and a small banana. My carbs per day is between 120-150 usually, with 80-107g of protein. Weight loss is slower now, as I am at 10 months post op...but I have lost 120 lbs thus far, with that amount of carbs and calories pretty much the entire time. I eat potatoes, pasta and rice, and bread....just significantly less and less often than I used to. Hope that helps!
  18. I went to solids at 4 weeks as well. I was dying for real food after 5 weeks pre op liquid only diet, and 3 weeks of full solids and soft foods. I slow cooked some beef stew all day. It was absolutely divine.

    Bariatric multivitamin for Canada?

I have been on the Jamieson Prenatal with DHA. I was told at my last appointment I could switch to Centrum Forte (2 a day)...but I had bought a bunch of the Jamieson, so I will finish that first. Also, I believe Jamieson is Canadian, and the prices are pretty good. You can order online...though I haven't had any issues getting them at the Drugstore or Grocery Store.

learning to let go of old eating habits

Hi! Not sure if this will help you or not....my program doesn't cut out food groups, and encourages getting to 1200 calories as soon as you can. I have been at 1200 calories since week 5 or so...and I eat carbs. I made this one change years ago with Pizza. Before surgery we would get pizza maybe twice a month, and it was always overdone. Large greasy pizzas, with fries and dips etc etc and of course I would get sick from the overindulgence every.single.time lol. I take a whole wheat pita, add some tomato sauce, pepperoni from the deli, and low fat cheese. Cook at 400 in the oven for about 15 min and it's amazing! Crispy but also gooey. Depending on what actual products you use....comes out to about 320 calories, 15g of fat, 36g of carbs, 19g of protein. Before surgery, I used to eat 3...now it is just one for dinner. And of course, you can out whatever toppings you want. It's also great for kids too because they can make the kind of pizza they want....without the price tag and all the added full fat and oil and doughy crust. I think there are many ways to get around certain kinds of food by making modifications to your favourites! The internet has non stop recipes that can help with alternatives regardless of the kind of program you are on.

    no more dairy...ugh! Breakfast?

I have seen Skyr yogurt that is lactose free...Skyr is delicious. Other than that I would recommend hard boiled eggs, or Cream of wheat (with a splash of caramel sugar free syrup) is so tasty like pancakes. I always make oatmeal in the am with protein powder, and Peanut Butter powder. Most ultrafiltered milk is lactose free (Fairlife)...maybe you can try some lactose free products? If not, oatmeal made with water vs milk works just as well too. Chia seed pudding with coconut milk would be pretty tasty too....and you can leave that overnight and grab some in the am. I have a slenderized version of the recipe if you'd like it

    Bariatric surgery and dating

Since I've had my RNY, my bathroom excursions smell like lingering death. I have to use 'poop-porri' or whatever it is called, plus a spray. I dread going at work....thankfully I'm pretty regular and don't need to worry about it too often. I have always assumed it was because of the protein powder (I still use 15grams in my oatmeal every morning)..and the smells are somewhat similar sorry TMI. I hadn't seen a lot of posts regarding this, just a lot of posts about constipation or diarrhea...so I thought it was somewhat normal but it wasn't a hot topic lol. Now I'm wondering if there is something wrong with us :S
