    So happy and need advice

    I did not have my bypass (12/27/17) as WLS. It was done to repair a hiatal hernia and severe GERD. In fact when the doctor got in there ⅓ of my stomach was in my chest cavity so they also had to repair my very torn diaphragm. I could not be happier that I had this procedure and (knock on wood), I am doing incredibly well. So well in fact that at my first appointment with my doctor (9 days post surgery), the doctor cleared me to eat all foods. No more stages. I have been still following the progression - just plan to speed it up. But looking for advice on what to try next. Have done cottage cheese. Have had some tilapia. If I progress to the soft foods stage in a couple days, what do you suggest to try next. And when did you start adding some crunchy carbs. I have some recipes for low carb crackers that would probably be great with tuna “salad”, etc. But what I really want is a salad - how long to wait for that? How long did you wait under normal progression to introduce roughage and raw vegetables? I know this is not the normal scenario for WLS surgery, but I am approved my by doctor for all of this. Thanks!!

  3. I had a bypass 12/27/17 due to severe GERD and a hiatal hernia - not WLS (although that is a very happy consequence). If you have any reflux issues, a sleeve is not a viable option - it makes the heartburn and reflux worse. So far, so great. I haven’t had any problems with any liquids so far (on the full liquid phase) and have my first follow up with the dr today. I haven’t weighed myself since the surgery so am looking forward to what the “official scale” says.

    I’m having a really hard time

    It was the most glorious thing ever. I tried it the first day of my full liquid with the fortified milk and couldn’t stomach it, but this time I just did it with regular non-fat milk (I’m having my protein shakes more regularly now) and it tasted so good. I used to eat it with dried cranberries and a little (very little) brown sugar, but this time I just added a few sprinkles of Splenda and Yummmmm.

    Cream of wheat is something I’m allowed during full liquid phase and omg, it was sooo good. Feels like actually eating like before - just much less of it.

    Sticker shock!

    While vitamins will be necessary the rest of your life, the type you have to take (chewable vs pill) can change after your Dr oks the move so you may be able to move to cheaper alternatives. My NUT gave me a list of 4 brands and how much I would have to take of each and what I would need to take to supplement if I went with the Flintstones chewables. My clinic also has deals set up with the major brands so I get 15% off by using my clinic code. With Bariatric advantage, I also save by putting my vitamins on subscription to be automatically shipped and then I get free shipping on those orders. My GERD drug which I won’t need to take any longer is $276 (my co-pay thru mail order) every 3 months. Not mentioning what I’ve saved ok food, I am saving money.

    Liquid Diet Phase

    My nutritionist said that I would feel kind of crappy for a little while on the liquid phase pre-surgery. It’s “carb flu” as your body has been used to the carbs and sugars that we have been accustomed to

    What couldn't you be without now?

    My NUT said if you take Flintstones chewables that there are 3 other supplements you have to add... B12, Thaimin, and something else. BUT after starting my Bariatric one-a-day chewable today it might be worth it.

    GERD

    My bypass was done because of GERD and hiatal hernia that had to be repaired. The Dr said I wasn’t a good candidate for the Nissen because of the likelihood of having to be redone and didn’t present the sleeve or band as real options due to making GERD worse. It was actually very interesting to find that gastric bypass was developed over 50 years ago as a cure for reflux. Only after did they start realizing how much weight patients lost and it became a weight loss surgery primarily, but my surgeon said that about 50% of the cases in his office (huge Britain clinic at Stanford hospital) are due to something other than weight loss.

    Insurance Question: Why only one requirement?

    I had RNY bypass 6 days ago. My first appointment with the surgeon was Dec 1st. I have a hiatal hernia and reflux that required repair and the only real way to guarantee not having further problems with the reflux was the RNY. My insurance approved as soon as all pre-op lab work was done (took about 12 days since we went on vacation the day after my first surgeon visit.) My surgery was not submitted as a weight loss surgery though - it was submitted as a hernia repair using RNY.

    7 days post op and i am kicked while down

    I am 6 days post op and have been successful with the Pure Protein brand of protein shakes. Costco carries them in vanilla and chocolate and has caramel recently too. I also discovered the banana cream flavor (at the grocery store) which was pretty good. (Chocolate is actually my favorite and tastes like chocolate milk.) Each serving for me (4oz) is 10 g of protein so it hasn’t been too bad getting my recommended amount. I agree that adding the unflavored whey with broth was not a positive experience. I also found a recipe today for a fruit smoothie which was about 8 g of protein for 4 oz. I could have upped the protein if I had used yogurt, but wanted something different: 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk ½ banana ½ cup frozen berries 1 scoop whey protein powder Blend and strain.
