I had this issue early on, starting about 3 weeks post op. I was shaky, weak, any exertion made me feel like I was going to pass out.
But it was not calories I needed. I needed B12. I got a shot from my surgeon's office, and now I take sublingual B12 supplements.
I'm at 5.5 months post op, and my calories are very low. Most days I am around 400 calories. I have no issues with energy level at all.
Don't delude yourself into thinking, I need calories, I need sugar. That is just our brain that got us to the point of needing WLS telling us that. Get your protein in, get your liquids in, talk to your Dr. about B12, and you will be fine

Liquids *SHOULD* go through through you... That's a good sign, means your swelling is going down. That'll be why you are getting some hunger as well, those aggravated nerves are healing up and getting back to their normal jobs. Your body isn't defective, wait for those foods and you'll get some restriction again.

Crystal light makes mixes with stevia now. You can find them in your supermarket. Freeze some to make your own sugar free pops.
Everything is too sweet for me...including the mixes I just mentioned. I just dilute everything with water.
Even “no sugar added” juices have lots of sugar in them. You may want to dilute them to cut down on your intake.
The bottom line is, you are the only one who will be held accountable for your decisions. Your health and progress is solely your responsibility. If you need help, folks here are always willing. Best wishes!

Hi, in my pre op stage I purchased a lot of sugar free popsicle, Jello etc. Someone said don't buy so much, of course I didn't listen. I was doing good until after my surgery I tried my best to eat that sugar free I just couldn't. My 5th day post op I'm dehydrated. If I didn't eat regular popsicles and regular jello and drinking tea and lemonad. I would be back in the Hospital. I only have one kidney, that's working at 80%. I had to look at the whole picture the reason why I was going to the dietitian and sugar free diet was to shrink my liver. I'm over that stage now I'm trying to heal from surgery. I'm not worried about losing weight right now, that will come later. My doctor has me on 4wks light duty. That's the time I'm using to discover my relationship with food. Come up with a prep my food and excercise plan. I know some may not agree what I'm doing. I have to customize my weight loss journey for myself.
My pureed stage starts in 3 days that's when I will go back to diet drink because my liquids stage is over.
Now I have zero powerade and sugar free items. I'm going to give away to my dietitian for patients. I'm so happy about this community we are learning together.

So what are you going to be drinking during the purée stage?
I certainly would restrict intake of sugar but to each their own.
    Good luck.

I'm sorry you're dehydrated. But regular popsicles and jello, lemonade have a lot of sugar. That is universally highly discouraged, if not out right banned post WLS.
I'd really encourage you to find another way to get hydration. You don't want to work against this amazing tool you now have.

Redapples got a reaction from KRush88 in What is you food/liquid in take at 6 days out?
My plan 2 shakes a day = 60 grams of protein and 64 oz of fluids jello, water, lemonade, popsicle, broth, for 10 days only. I'm 5 days post op haven't made goal yet, but I'm trying. The hardest thing for me is to eat when I'm not hungry there are times that 2 or 3 hrs will go by with nothing to drink.

Unless you are really not sure of what you can eat then I would not bother. She is probably going to say the same thing she has already told you and make you log your food which I hate logging.

I haven't seen a dietician since my first required visit. I don't like hovering professionals who use one-size-fits-all menus. Not only am I a scratch cook, but the cuisine in my household uses ingredients unfamiliar to my dietitian. If I have a question about vitamins that might be something worth a visit, but I've read extensively and asked questions of others about my vitamins and other supplements, so I feel prepared. Honestly, she hasn't answered a single question easily available elsewhere and for free.
My doctor told me yesterday during my 6weeks post-op visit that I'm doing great (38lbs lost). I haven't started an exercise program yet because of cramps, but that's the area I'd seek more help with. In other words, if I had to decide where to put my money, I'd invest it in a personal trainer and not in a dietitian.
As for you being worth it, you are ALWAYS WORTH IT!

My program allows free visits with their dietitians for life if you had surgery within their program. I only live about 5 minutes away from where they are located so I have taken full advantage of this perk and meet with them monthly and will continue to do so as long as I'm seeing a benefit. I found it very helpful during the first 6 months because I was progressing through new foods and increasing my quantities and could talk to them about how that was going and ask questions. Now that I'm 18 months out my appointments are really just a check-in and a way to keep myself accountable - much like the weight watchers meetings I used to go to back in the day. My vote is yes, take full advantage of the resources you have available (assuming you have the time and money of course).

I understand how you feel we share the same wls date. I'm not sure what plann you're on I keep telling myself make it to Aug. 4 my puree stage 2 starts. Jello and shakes really fills me up I'm trying to sip sip all day long that's really helping me. Don't let 15 min go by with out having a sip. I'm drinking tea, lemonade etc. Clear liquids only plus my shakes. Best wishes hang in there it's hard now soon you will find it easy!

Jello? I learned to love me some Jello! And I found some flavored protein water at CVS. I think its called Trimino. They're pretty good when you need a change of flavor.

I had surgery 7/24, drank smooth move tea with no results, finally had a dose of Milk Of Magnesia before bed last night and this morning 7/29 got great results with no straining.
My Dr office recommended MOM with prune juice but it worked for me without the juice.
I feel much better and relieved that all is working. Good luck.

I had all I could do to just shower, get dressed, and go for my daily walks. I remember my mom came and took me out for the first time post op and I lasted all of 45 minutes in the bookstore and I was ready to go home.
I think it’s normal. Do your walking. If your body needs to rest though....let it rest a bit.

thanks for that. i think i may have underestimated how big a deal it would be. all i feel like doing is lying around and watching tv. (hello, all three series of broadchurch!) i’m doing my walking and building up activity, but anything that requires mental exursion is just a no go. like i’ve been putting off a simple email for days now. just wanted to get a reality check and see if this has happened to others. ?

The anesthesia can sometimes have different effects on people's psyche. Also, your body has just been through something pretty traumatic.
Personally, I was uncharacteristically emotional for a few weeks post-op (and a little depressed).
Be easy with yourself, you've just had surgery.

4 nights. Apparently that is long compared to others.
I was so dehydrated after surgery that I had an IV connected the whole time. On day 2 even 2 IVs for a few hours.
I was so freaked out about the first week that this was a blessing for me. Had my own room and a TV and if anything was wrong I could call somebody.
I was glad. I would have freaked out at home alone.
