I was recently on a cruise to celebrate my surgeversary (March 22, 2016). There are sooo many choices of food, you will not have a problem finding something to eat. You shouldn't have a problem if you are avoiding alcohol and soda - those cost extra anyway... They always have water, lemonade available. at breakfast they also have juices available (apple, orange, cranberry). The thing to be careful of??? the buffet. The plate are large, so try to recognize what portion sizes are in relation to you hand.

Hi all, I am dealing with a condition of lymphedema that has caused me to gain weight since I started my program almost 2 years ago. My bariatric team typically does not do the surgery if there is weight gain, but this is a condition I have no control over... I am wrapping my legs (which seems to help some, but there is no getting rid of lymphedema). Tomorrow I will be calling my insurance coordinator at the surgeon's office and my insurance company to see what I can do and where I am at as far as getting approved for surgery. I have done the 6 mo (2 years) supervised diet, and from the nutritionist standpoint I was ok to do surgery in March 2015. It has taken me so long, because I have had job/insurance changes, and finally am at a point where I have the right coverage, and I am no longer on probation as a new employee. I guess my question here is, Has anyone had experience with lymphedema causing weight gain after starting the program and still get approved?

Has anyone had this surgery using the WPS insurance? I do know that it does cover bariatric surgery, but I am curious about how long it took for an approval and whatnot. this was the only insurance option that does cover bariatrics as an employee of the State of WI (that I was offered anyway through the WDVA). My policy goes into effect Jan 1... I am getting excited and nervous, and ready to get the ball rolling.

Hello, I am somewhat new to Bariatric Pal... I have been in the process of getting ready for surgery for 1 1/2 yrs... it has taken so long because of insurance issues. my question to you is, when and where would these support group meetings be held? I have not been able to attend any support groups due to schedule... I live in Racine and I work the 3rd shift.

OK, so I have UHC as my insurance right now. But my current plan does not cover the surgery. I am switching to a plan that does cover it, but that will not be effective until Jan 1. In the mean time, I have been going to regular NUT visits (I have been working on this for over a year now, do to insurance changes). Over the last 3 months I have seen some weight gain, and my GP finally referred me to a vascular center. This new Dr. gave me the diagnosis of lymphedema that has gotten inflamed because of outside issues. These outside issues mostly revolve around stress (of a few different types and happened at the same time). I was told by my NUT that for most insurances I need to be at or below my starting weight in order to have surgery. Right now, because of the lymphedema, I am above my starting weight. since lymphedema does not have a "cure" and there is treatment, but it takes time for the treatment to be effective. I was also told that WLS will help with the lymphedema Does anyone have any advise on how I should proceed in the process? I was planning on having the surgery in Feb/Mar with the new ins.... is that now going to be delayed?

@@Pinkgirl1234 my lymphedema is not cancer related (it is congenital, I have had swollen legs for as long as I can remember and the drs just kept me on diuretics). This is the worst the swelling has ever been, I just got sent to the right dr this time. This dr did not recommend physical therapy, he is suggesting compression therapy 3x a week to start out with. I just met this dr last week and I have yet to hear from the clinic to schedule the therapy sessions.

Has anyone been diagnosed with lymphedema after starting the process, but before surgery? I have swelling in my legs that is not going away with the help of Lasix. My Dr came to the conclusion that it is lymphedema and that I should continue wearing my compression socks, and discontinue the Lasix.... one problem I can't get the socks on (my legs have swelled that much). The Lasix is also a high risk for me to take because of my QT prolongation (heart concern). As a result I am retaining alot of fluid=weight gain. what kind on treatment should i try to help lose the weight now??? I am already eating mostly fruits and veggies, and getting my Protein in. I am on my feet all day at work (I am a CNA in a nursing home on night shift) and I am in school for 7 hrs 2 days a week... and try to sleep somewhere in there. Oh and my job.... they can force me to work double shifts based on facility needs (so, if someone calls in, they could make me stay). With that being said, I don't necessarily have the extra time for workouts.

i have had very little processed food, and i have cut out soda months ago. I loved doing aquacise.... but that was about 5 years ago before my schedule got insane. I am going to look into lymph massage.... do you think accupuncture could help too? i have that done once in a while. Maybe I need to go more often?

what would you suggest for someone who does a lot at work? I am a CNA at a Veteran's nursing home in WI. I am aiming to have my sleeve done at the beginning of 2016. I am (as of right now) planning on taking 2 weeks for recovery, but I also can't use FMLA until March (must be employed there for 12 months).

Well, I had found out from my surgeon back in September, that I would need a sleep study regarding my slee apnea... it has not been confirmed whether I have apnea or not. After multiple attempts to get it scheduled, I finally got a call this afternoon... I got is scheduled for next week

I just recently started a new... that I am very thankful for. Along with the job comes the new health insurance. I have several plans to choose from, but none of the cover bariatric surgery. I feel like I am being pinned into a corner and being forced to pay out of pocket (which I cant afford ouf of pocket). Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I finally got the results from my sleep study... I have obstructive sleep apnea... Yeah. On Thursday I have an appt to get a cpap. And then I see a pulmonologist in April

So, I had my 6 mo appt with my nutritionist... she has decided to not clear me to go onto the next step because I had maybe 3 sodas in the last month... I just have to get my head in the game and have absolutely no soda for this next month, so I continue in my progress... in the mean time I have lost almost 20. I am happy about that.

I am pre-op... I am during the insurance required physician supervised diet with nut visits. And because of the 3 pops, she won't submit everything to the bariatric team that my surgeon works with. Plus I am having a sleep study done on Tues (which that is a whole other subject).

It would be nice to do the study at home... my GP's nurse had actually said something about that, but my insurance won't cover that. It is my GP ordering the sleep study, not my surgeon... I guess right now, I have to wait and see... wait to have the test done, then see if I have apnea or not.

I dont want to have to use a CPAP. In theory, I could be having my surgery in about 2 months... I think I can just sleep the way I have been until apnea would resolve.... can't I?

I went ahead and ordered a box of the patches, which is supposed to last a month... yes you put a patch on for 24 hrs then you are good for a week, but because of the requires nutrition post op.... they are not the best choice. Each pach has 1000 mcg of b12. The info I was given by my nut said that we need 1000 mcg every other day.

Has anyone tried the B12 patch instead of the sublingual? I found them as an option on Amazon, but unsure if it supplies enough for post op nutrition.

Apparently it's something you put either on your wrist or behind your ear for 24hrs once a week. This is what I read in the description on Amazon.

I've seen some people post about the pre op diet, and some have asked if it is really possible to do. Has anyone attempted to follow the pre op diet before you actually had to follow it for surgery? Or is this not advisable?

Has anyone been denied because of being considered a "passive smoker"? I have never smoked in my life, but my husband smokes. (I have been trying to get him to quit for years). I do not allow him to smoke in the house or the car, but I can still smell it on him.

I've been doing a breakfast shake for a few months now... I was thinking about starting to of a shake at lunchtime too. And of course having a sensible meal at dinner.

My name is Jessica, and I am planning on having the sleeve done by Dr Chua in Milwaukee WI. My first visit with the surgeon was in July, but couldn't get started with the nutritionist until early September. I have now had 4 nutrition visits with the follow ups with GP. My BMI is 54, and my insurance requires a co morbidity.... However, I don't have one of the major ones.... Insurance also denied a sleep study because I don't meet all of the criteria. Somewhat frustrated and unsure if insurance will approve surgery. In the meantime I have lost 15 lbs since I saw the surgeon.

Thank you for that information about the co morbidities. I will also discuss these with my Dr. So that the ones I experience are documented. This has been very helpful.
